Well now I need to look up Rival Sons to find out who they are and why they’re billed above Filter lol

I know Filter has definitely dipped in popularity over the years, but Rival Sons being billed over them is crazy to me

Rival Sons has been pretty consistent in touring with a lot of arena and amp level bands over the past few years. I saw them with Smashing Pumpkins and Stone Temple Pilots a couple years ago. And I'm pretty sure they opened on Black Sabbath's final tour. Meanwhile the last time Filter headliner in Oregon it was at Portland's local dive bar venue. No shade to Filter, but I think the billing makes sense.

I don't know that Filter was ever really that big despite having a bunch of songs on the radio. And, honestly, that's probably because they spent so much time as an opener and at radio rock festivals over the years as a middling act.

And from 2000 on, I actually think having that one song hit hard at Top 40 and adult contemporary probably did them more harm than good... They kinda became a "who is this for?" kinda band. They were never heavy enough for the metal kids, not industrial enough for industrial kids, etc.

But looking concertarchives.org, I think they've been a pretty consistent 800-1.5k capacity venue headliner depending on the market and package. Legacy will only get you so far, and I think Rival Sons probably tipped that point in the last few years.

That’s a pretty fair point, honestly… I guess I thought that they’d have seniority with them being an older group with big hits.

Now that I think about it too, they also haven’t toured much this decade either, which I imagine wouldn’t help a band of their status. Richard was pretty focused on composing for films for a while. I think the Rob Zombie/Alice Cooper tours they did were their first tours in a while. But I could be wrong

Yeah, they didn't do too much in the 2010s. They were active but I don't think they did much that moved the needle. And when they do its festivals, support slots, and package tours/co-headliners. Beyond that bigger Rob Zombie tour you referenced... They did a package tour with Helmet and Local H; a headliner with Orgy as direct support; opened for Coal Chamber, Ministry, Candlebox, and 10 Years on tours.

So they're basically just playing to people who probably know who they are, anyway.

Rival sons has been at 2k cap rooms when they've come through my area on headliners. They've opened for smashing pumpkins, greta van fleet and they're opening for guns n roses on some European dates. I think it's safe to say they're bigger than Filter
