Maybe im just dumb, but what I saw in Bernie’s statement didn’t seem wrong to me - corporations do use the H1B Visa program to trap employees in precarious positions and undercut the wages people get paid when they are not in such a precarious position. The headline of that statement itself called for reforming the H1B program, not scrapping it altogether. That’s very different than how conservatives talk about immigration. Am i just missing something?

 

My understanding is HB-1 visas come with salary minimums that other work visas don't? Thought I remembered reading that somewhere

 

i think HB-1 visas should be reformed to compel or make mandatory that companies fast track the employees permanent resident/citizenship status. lets see how much companies would be willing to take foreign nationals now plus lessens the power companies have over visa workers due to their status.

 

I think it functions as a prevailing wage type of thing - and it’s lower than what a lot of people in these professional tech jobs get paid otherwise. Plus, a common complaint from Visa holders (at least from what I’ve read) is that they can be shorted or mistreated and because they’re afraid of losing their visa, their ability to report it is significantly limited.

 

Idk, I tend to oversimplify things, but if a billionaire in general - and Elon Musk specifically - likes something, the correct position is likely to be on the other side. It should just be reflexive.

Been on the go due to the fires for the last few days (the lady and I are in socal part time) and this is not news but boy has this whole event been remarkably illustrative of how dumb everyone is.

conservative assholes blaming the libs, libs who stanned Kamala being aghast that our government hasn’t done better, online morons claiming the state has run out of water because they can’t take two seconds to understand it’s hard to pump millions of gallons of water up a hill while also spraying millions of gallons of water out of residential fire hydrants and on and on.

Nobody can see the forest through the trees, this is so much bigger than the mayor of Los Angeles or Gavin Newsom or Trump or Biden or municipal budget allocation and the just base small potatoes political posturing around a generational fire event makes me physically ill, the whole things rotten and it feels like the only thing anyone wants to do is use climate disaster to reinforce their priors.
