I’m not clued in the country genre but I feel like you could fit Sturgill in with Kacey and the others unless something happened and he went right wing recently. Once again, don’t know shit about country other than Big Iron is great.

I could be wrong. He's been doing Man O acoustic sets as "Zachary Ross performing Man Overboard" over the last few months. Would expect this to be the same.

    Things have changed.

It was an AWESOME tour, problem is I have no need to see them again after it. It was that good.

Shows were awesome though crowd energy was DEFINITELY dragging towards the middle of AI, just given the set length.

I'd see them again but for me never will a Green Day show live up to that tour. Unless it includes a Nimrod playthrough.

Album plays are also a major nostalgia marker as a concept, beyond the idea of just listening to old music. Albums don’t really penetrate at a huge scale anymore, and have shorter lifespans too, so anyone indulging the whole “our album is a body of work” concept is inherently indulging the sanctity of the album itself (though most people here are in that camp too, myself included)

I know I have seen some bands play their most recent albums (at the time) in full as well, the one I remember right now is The Smashing Pumpkins playing Oceania in full in 2012. It was my first time seeing them and wasnt the best.

I cant remember other examples but Im sure it has happened in other shows I went

I mean, yeah, there's exceptions. But they're rare (MCR doing "Black Parade" is another, I'd imagine). With that Green Day one specifically, I'd argue that Dookie is perfectly-paced in terms of singles placement. You don't go more than 3 songs without a song everybody knows/loves. And the ones that aren't singles are super short.

So you didn't notice it during that album. And, to be sure, that was my favorite show of the year. But as far as crowd energy...

...For sure. You could feel the lull from "Give Me Novocaine" onward. Bit of a spike during "Letterbomb" and "WMUWSE" but mostly the crowd was done at that point. Haha.

I was supposed to go to that SP tour but my show got cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy. Thought it was a bizarre choice to tour arenas playing you're (very long) new album in full when the album didnt do well commercially, and especially since that album is so top heavy.

Also remember Taking Back Sunday doing Tidal Wave in full on that tour in 2016/2017, and the crowd reaction being very dull.

I generally enjoy album plays. Obviously the bigger fan of the band/album you are the more mileage it gets. There are some bands that should definitely stick with the singles approach though.

I will say one of the more baffling ones to me was Manchester Orchestra doing Cope at Riot Fest last year. It doesn't help that I know the first half of the album a lot better, but that just didn't work in a festival setting. I might've felt different if I'd gone to one of the regular dates though.

And of course it gets old when bands do the SAME album too often.

Seeing Nine Inch Nails play The Downward Spiral in full unannounced is a concert moment I’ll probably never get again.

It was unreal looking around when they got to Ruiner and everyone was like holyyyyyy shit they’re really doing this.

It was the loudest, hottest show I’ve ever seen at Webster Hall.

Yeah I always thought those were really cool when a band will surprise a crowd with the full album play. I remember Death Cab did that with Transatlanticism years before they did the tour and we all lost our minds.

Another memorable album-play for me was seeing Bad Religion play No Control completely unannounced.

They came out, played the first 3-4 songs and Greg said something like “you may have noticed we’ve played the first few songs of No Control. Well, since it’s the 30th anniversary, we’re gonna play it all! But we’ll get to the rest later, here’s some other songs”

This was the only show of that tour that they played it. It was awesome

I was thinking of seeing Jimmy Eat World play in 2011 and then opted to skip the show (had seen them in the fall and it was a train ride to NJ). They ended up playing Bleed American in full unannounced.
