You’re right I am a glutton for punishment

 

They're going to have to eat some dead money to do it, but they got to overhaul this defensive line minus Hendrickson first. Also reevaluate how they coach players in the secondary because there is a long string of 1st/2nd round picks who probably wouldn't be starters on most playoff teams. That or just go full ballhawk like the 2009 Saints & hope you get a bunch of turnovers.

Hilariously, could see the Steelers be the kind of team to go for JJ McCarthy, but they will 1000% not shell out big money for a QB.

I also 100% think they bring Russ back, mostly cause the price isnt gonna be that high. The Geno Smith/Bakey Mayfield type deal...3yr/$100mil, like $40mil guar...basically cant even get backups you think might start much lower than that.

Id keep Fields too if he'd do a 1-2yr deal like Darnold is on now.

I mean, I want Fields 100% because maybe he's got value down the road...and hell, keep Russ' contract value down. But, Russ was basically exactly what I expected (full season version is 3500-4000yds, 25-30tds, 8-10int). Which is 10-1500 more yards, 20 more tds, and about the same ints as the steelers QBs did in 2022 and 2023. And about on par with what Ben did in 2020 when they went 12-4.

Doesnt help that prior to our QB's going downhill, we were somehow maximizing terrible WRs (JuJu, James Washington, Claypool, Diontae....soon to be Pickens and Austin). None will top 1000yds anywhere else, and JuJu aside, probably make it past their Age 28 season as routinely rostered players. Which, is a fun draft pick gambit, but terrible for actually running an offense compared to what, say, Cincy is doing.
