Hey, baseball super nerd here. Multiple things can be true at the same time. Yes corporate super greed gave us expanded mlb playoffs but it can still create a compelling matchup nonetheless. Thats my take at least. But you are correct that most people hate the mlb expanded playoffs—at least until their team sneaks in by qualifying for the sixth spot lol.

The more insidious part of mlb playoff expansion is actually not that it “cheapens” the playoffs but that it incentivizes cheap owners to not spend money on good players bc they can get into the playoffs with a suck ass team. I thought Dbacks-Rangers had as much juice as a matchup as Yankees-Dodgers did. Unfortunately both series ended up being kinda boring imo but that had nothing to do with the matchup.

For cfb I do think 12 teams is too many most years (and certainly this year) but they’re not gonna “unexpand” now so what’s the point in arguing about it. But yeah 8 team playoff with first round being on campus, second round use 4/6 NY6 rotating, then championship second Mon in Jan makes so much more sense

 

And while we’re talking about baseball: the “actually the bye is bad and a disadvantage” take was dumb as fuck in baseball but that discourse is REALLY STUPID in football good lord. These dudes are the walking wounded at the end of every game of course the extra rest is an advantage beyond just the fact that it’s literally an auto-advance. Too many big brains out there man

 

i am off the "bye is bad in baseball" train after this year but there was definitely something to it last year and the year before i am 100% certain do not try to change my mind

 

I think there is but I think that’s on the teams and not on the system

Football, even at the college level, is statistically the most unpredictable sport of the major ones in America. IIRC it’s baseball, basketball, hockey then football but a pretty big gap between the first two and the other two.

all that is to say that football seasons are so short and there’s so much luck/noise/whatever you want to call it that goes into a season that to get the “true” best team the majority of the time, nfl seasons would have to be like 40 games long. So football by nature is chaotic and no reshaping of playoffs, bcs, old bowl system can fully account for that.

I think it’s fun, personally. I love seeing Phil Knight University lose (no offense to any Oregon fans here; I used to be a Michigan state fan so I can’t make too many jokes) and the chaos of not getting the best team.

Interesting. Like the idea for players that won't have a pro career and incentivize more of them to get higher degrees for their post-playing careers.

 

If you do that they gotta be a little stricter in what counts as a year of eligibility.
