I already decided I’m going back next year with my daughter. We’re gonna geek out in the Monsters and Mario areas for sure. Now since you’ve been there recently I’m guessing, how is the Jurassic World ride?

Saw this yesterday as it premiered here. Unfortunately for some reason the sound was awful and clipping each time it was loud and deep (which was a lot!)

Very good, no complaints about the acting if you see it as theatrical especially. Out of all the roles I guess I found Dafoe to be Dafoeing a lot but not at all too much. On the opposite side, kudos to Skarsgard for disappearing into the role (again).

Never saw or read the original but expected the story would be straightforward, so really enjoyed the journey.
Enjoy having Eggers as a slow pace director so he is 4/4. Would not rank his films so far, but original stories always would get a boost so this would never be #1.

 

I definitely have some thoughts on this and will have to muddy through them a bit. my first impression is good but not great. it's maybe his most beautiful looking movie which is certainly saying a lot, cannot fault it there. I want a print of that scene with Thomas coming to the crossroads framed on my wall

that said it's the first time an Eggers film has felt style over substance for me and it's a lot to do with this being an adaptation of such a famous text. Dracula is obviously one of the most iconic books in the genre but it's also pretty frustrating and repetitive at points and that came through at points here. an actor as fantastic as Emma Corrin getting nothing interesting to do is probably the best example of what I mean, where Eggers incredible talent kind of jars up against the text instead of enhancing it. the Renfield guy also felt like a great performance done pretty dirty by the narrative

I'll also go on record that Skarsgard was just doing too much here. I was fully onboard for the first 20 thinking this was gonna be my favourite Eggers and it really lost a lot of lustre once Orlok was talking and stuff. could not take him seriously with the moustache and everyone in my showing was laughing when he started purring like a cat when he saw blood lol, I assume that was not the intention. ATJ was straight up bad and I usually like his work, no clue what happened there. that scene with him yelling at Dafoe and Ineson to leave his house was genuinely painful acting

credit where it's due ofc Lily was transcendent in this, almost all the credit not for the cinematography should go to her from this. that scene with her speaking under her breath to Dafoe was fucking terrifying, she might have stolen the crown of my favourite performance of the year from Nell Tiger Free even if First Omen was a better movie than this. shoutout to Nicholas Hoult too though, my biggest problem with the book has always been that Harker is such a limp dillweed of a character. glad they leaned into Thomas being the kinda dude to just stand still while horses are galloping straight at him and cast the best actor currently playing milquetoast Wife Guys

 

I see your complaints and definitely feel a few of them however Skarsgard absolutely knocked it out of the park and can’t fathom laughing at anything he did in the film. Also again I liked ATJ’s performance and I see the complaints about his acting in the film and don’t agree personally.

 

The mustache gives him a Vlad the Impaler vibe which I think is neat

 

I read somewhere that Eggers stuck pretty close to the original novel in terms of how the count is actually described physically. I believe he is said to have a large mustache but most of the initial adaptations focused more on the fangs, pointed ears, and pale skin. Everyone thinks of Lugosi when they imagine Dracula but I think that how Skarsgard is portrayed is probably closer to the mark

 

I get the historical accuracy angle and know it's Eggers' thing but it simply killed any scary potential of every scene where we saw Orlok full on for me. bro looked like Jim Carrey in Sonic lmao. sometimes adapting stuff means not being entirely faithful to stuff which is silly, imo

 

I thought the design was great and made the movie feel more real and grounded.

 

Idk, the mustache worked for me? Not sure why we’d pretend simply having a thick mustache would be silly and the equivalent to Eggman or whatever, lol. Kinda weird thing to struggle with imo.

 

I loved that he looks and sounds like the cursed rotting corpse of Vlad the Impaler instead of anything resembling the classic Schreck design

 

I think it would have been easy and cheap to make him look like Schreck

Team mustache here. It also makes him stand out from other adaptations. He looked like how I imagine someone actually called Count would’ve looked from then and there.

 

See this Count has facial hair. This guy is even older and from even further away than Orlok. No further discussion is needed imo.

 

I meant “pretend” dismissively, not literally. I cannot believe you’re unfamiliar with the idea of a man having a thick mustache, lol. Like you said, it’s not that deep.

Oh well.

 

I chuckled at his accent and demeanor a couple of times but not in like a negative way. Overall I found him to be a very effective Nosferatu!

 

heading to the theater with stale azzwater later tonight. gonna get some taco bell then hit the movies (hoping I dont crap myself). Is this movie worth it? he wants to see muphasa but im not into that live action disney bs

there were two teens in the seats next to me that had to check their phone every 15 minutes. at an 8:45 am showing. like i guess they must have wanted to see the movie if they are going to an 8:45am showing so why not actually watch it. i dont understand the kids!
