German Error Message so good you named it twice! I enjoyed it when I first heard it. Though it’s definitely a sad listen

I guess I'm finally ageing out of most emo since not much really clicked with me this year. Doesn't help I don't really vibe with most of the fifth wave at all. Going to use these recs to go back and revisit some things I just bounced off the first time.

    beautiful and chequered, the end

These plus Southtown Lanes (prob my fav of them all) are really the only things that had any longevity for me this year, so I'm there with ya.

Only things connecting with me hard from the scene are new things from old bands

I mean also technically Glass Beach, which is probably the most slept on album of 2024 at this point, but that ain't even really emo anymore anyways

Also, I don’t really think it’s aging out. I also haven’t been super enamored with new releases this year, either. Things have gotten a little derivative, and nothing is really capturing my attention. The genre (and its adjacent counterparts) are due for a shake up.

this is why I love this thread! I had completely missed macseal this year - it is so good, absolutely loving it.

  18. Macseal has been the big one for me too. I think emo-ish stuff that leans more into screamo or punk has been more exciting this year.

yeah that scans for why I wasn’t as engaged this year. I continue to trend towards emo with pop rock influences.

In a weird circumstance of events, I was listening to Smash Mouths self-titled record yesterday and was thinking to myself.

“If an emo band recorded this record today (and had it be just a smidge more emo adjacent), they would fill instantly fill a power vacuum in the genre”

which was a very weird thought but I stand behind it. I think culture abuse really almost was that band (and for good reason, they are not) and no one has really filled that gap since. But you see fans really praise bands when they take on the influence of alt/pop rock bands like third eye blind, sugar ray (specifically 14:59), super drag, Lit, etc

thoughts? Is that a bad take?

It just dawned on me that we’re halfway through the decade. I should retrospect on my favorite emo tracks of the last 5 years.

I’d be interested in seeing what y’all’s favorite tracks were from 2020-now.
