Funny seeing the Red Sox backup plans start to leak as reports of >$700 million offers leak out.

Also funny that their backup is a guy they could have had last year if they just offered multiple years last year.

There have been reports of what the Mets, Yankees and Blue Jays would do if they didn’t land Soto too. Jays and Yankees are also linked to Hernandez.

I do agree they should have been more aggressive with Hernandez last offseason though.

    Fun must be always. Prestigious

It also makes sense cause I saw people believe Hernandez was close to signing with the dodgers but there’s no way he should do that if people are getting desperate after missing out on Soto.

I understand but if they don’t land Soto I don’t think it’s for lack of trying this time. It will ultimately come down to where he wants to play now.

I genuinely believe they have no interest in landing Soto. They know Boras and they know Soto wants to break the bank so I think they’re comfortable having a close but no cigar bid so they can say they tried.

Yeah I do not even remotely buy that. They met with him already, they can paint that as “trying”. They very clearly want to land him. I ultimately don’t think they do but they don’t have much incentive to go this far if they’re not really interested

You don’t offer someone a record breaking contract if you’re not serious because what if Soto says yes then you’re screwed. Plus why even waste your time if you’re not serious.

I think if they got him for the 3rd highest bid, they’d be fine with that. But I don’t think they’re gonna have the #1 bid which, to me, means they’re not seriously trying.

As to what’s the point, to try and change the narrative as ratings and attendance continue to dwindle and the general feeling remains that they’re not trying anymore.

It absolutely would not be the first time this ownership group has entered into a contract negotiation based exclusively on narratives and vibes. This time they just know to not win the bid lol

Look I fuckin hate John Henry but under no circumstances can you look at a team offering 15 years and $650+ million and say they’re not really trying lol

If it’s reported by someone credible that they had the best bid and Soto just wanted NY, fine they tried. But coming in 3rd doesn’t really scream “we’re trying our best!”

It still doesn’t really make any sense though. If they wanted to change the narrative that they’re not trying, they could back up the Brinks truck to Burnes/Fried at a fraction of the cost that it would take to land Soto, since pitching is a much bigger need for this team than offense. Hell they could get Teoscar too and the combined cost would still be less. They clearly want the guy

this seems like a silly way to run an organization

who is buying tickets off the idea that the team tried to land Soto?

It’s okay if you guys disagree with me, or if your bar for “they’re trying” is lower than mine. But I remain confident they will not get the player and will not have been the highest bidder.

The problem is teams likely don’t know what the other teams are actually offering. It’s not like an open auction where the offers are heard by everyone. The teams aren’t leaking contract numbers to reporters, those are being leaked by Boras and may or may not be true.

I don’t think the Red Sox will have the highest bid either. Just hoping it’s close enough that they can sell Soto and why he should sign with the team.

I know I don’t post in here often so you guys don’t really know me, but I’m not a moron lol. I know how negotiations work. I also know when you’re consistently mediocre, it’s an odd time to be calling bluffs and holding firm.

I don’t think you’re a moron at all lol and there is plenty of reason not to trust this FO, and again I ultimately don’t think they land Soto, I’m just saying if they’re going into this offseason trying to change the narrative, there are cheaper and much easier ways to do that which would still leave this fanbase satisfied.

I’d rather sign Hernandez and one of the top pitchers left than just Soto if I’m Boston

His bat does not move that team enough, they need more

I love Dave but his knowledge of the Sox needs and current roster is not the best as shown by his description of it earlier in the thread
