    Megalopolis - 8/10

I’m not even sure what to say about this honestly other than I just really loved it. it’s a passion project through and through and I’m so happy he was able to bring it to life.

  3. Blood Beat (1983) - 7/10

If Blood Beat (1983) has a million fans, then I am one of them. If Blood Beat (1983) has ten fans, then I am one of them. If Blood Beat (1983) has only one fan then that is me. If Blood Beat (1983) has no fans, then that means I am no longer on earth. If the world is against Blood Beat (1983), then I am against the world.

I've tried to start that about 5 times and always get sidetracked

  5. The parts without the ghost samurai with animated powers can be a little dry, but it's so, so cozy. And a Christmas movie!

    Kingdom of Heaven (director’s cut) - 4/5

having never seen the original version I have no idea how it was 45 minutes shorter, I have no clue what they could have cut.

I saw Kingdom of Heaven in theaters when I was 13 but don’t remember much, so I’ve wanted to revisit it and wasn’t sure whether to do the directors cut or not

I haven't seen either, my brain had merged Kingdom of Heaven and Days of Heaven and now I'm sad I don't get to watch Terrence do the crusades.

Are you not entertained? Southland Tales by way of Baz Luhrmann, starring Adam Driver as Neo. About as insane as I expected, better in some ways (LaBeouf and Plaza's performances) and worse in others (how do you criticize a script that barely existed in any tangible sense?). Sporadically very enjoyable, but frequently ranging from messy to outright bad. Coppola should've casted Biff Wiff instead of Jon Voight.

  14. Smile 2 - 8/10
Much like the first film, shockingly good given its gimmick, and even better than the first film considering its further lean towards psychological horror and away from supernatural horror. I don't think it needs to be over two hours (I'm sure you could trim 15-20 minutes off the runtime and not lose anything), but I'm honestly so impressed with how tight and stylistically fresh it feels. Really well-directed camera movements and a good balance of practical gore with the jump scares you'd expect. One of the toughest "needle yank" scenes I've ever watched in my life. Naomi Scott is a star and really locks in the material here. Likely one of the best horror films of the year, and it may have been even better if it was a standalone not tied to the Smile franchise. Will be interested in seeing Parker Finn direct a non-franchise film.

    Dead of Night (1945) - 8.5/10
An early horror anthology that falls into the same trap we see modern anthologies fall into, where segments vary in quality and tone, but this one is mostly very good until the halfway point when it becomes great. "The Golfer's Story" is SO funny, and while "The Ventriloquist's Dummy" is remembered for a reason, it's the wraparound segment's terrifying finale that really pushes the film into truly unsettling and innovative territory. If that segment actually inspired real astrophysicists, there's no way it didn't inspire the descent into madness captured in Late Night With the Devil. I had a blast with this, and I would urge even horror fans that feel hit or miss on anthologies to give this one a watch as we approach the holiday season.

  15. I am also a little over halfway into Deadpool and Wolverine. Kind of a Marvel hater, but even with the #random humor, I seemed to enjoy the first two enough, and I love Jackman's Wolverine, so of course I was looking forward to catching this on streaming. It kind of just feels like they made a car commercial for 13-year-olds so far.

  16. Deadpool & Wolverine - 4/10
Pretty fun up to a certain point and absolutely grating after that point. At one point Chris Evans landed on his nuts and I was embarrassed to be watching this in the same room as my wife. The tonal whiplash between the XBOX Live humor of the movie and an unironic sentimental montage of behind the scenes footage from the X-Men films set to "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" during the credits made me feel like I was having a stroke.

  17. Wait wdym Nightbitch and Queer are already out. I still need to see Wicked and Moana 2. Time is moving too fast, there's too much shit to watch

  18. I have like six more movies after this to log (there will be more after this weekend) but I'm feeling too lazy to review them all right now so I'm just gonna get these first four out:

    Bad Santa - 6.5/10
I don't think I've seen this until now? Parts are vaguely familiar, probably from catching bits and pieces on TV. Didn't know how it would hold up 20 years later, but reports of the Coen Brothers doing rewrites caught my interest. It definitely hasn't aged gracefully, but depending on your threshold for lowbrow humor, there's a goof amount of fun here. It stays relatively grounded throughout, and Lauren Graham's character aside, most of the performances here are shockingly charming (even when their character is perhaps underwritten). Brett Kelly as Thurman "The Kid" Murman is legitimately good stuff. Just enough heart to take the edge off of all the drinking, cursing, and fucking jokes. I see that there's a sequel, but it feels like something that shouldn't exist, and most of the reviews I've seen point that way too. As it stands, it's a pretty good time.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang - 8/10
Another one that is pretty time and place stylistically, especially with regards to its narration, but I'd be lying if I said Shane Black didn't excel at making dark, comedic mystery flicks that just feel fun in a way that a lot of movies don't any more. Just like The Nice Guys, there are moments that can feel convoluted, and other moments lay the emotion on pretty thick, but this thing is ridiculously well-paced with great performances all around and some pretty big laughs that have stood. the test of time. Maybe I'm just a sucker for a movie set at Christmas.

    Edward Scissorhands - 8.5/10
Shocked at how well this has held up. Despite what Tim Burton may have become over time, he really did create some special work in his prime. The distinct visual style is a given, but what really struck me is how funny and magical the whole film feels. Way less horror-adjacent than I remembered it being as a kid and wya more gothic fairy tale. In some ways, it feels like a family film made by John Waters. Excellent casting and performances bring a film so whimsical to life that even an abrupt tonal change in the third act can't bring it down. I woke up the next day wishing I could have spent more time in that world.

    Deep Red - 7/10
Undeniably stylish and a vibe, but also surprisingly tedious towards the end of the second act? Honestly, who cares with the blood is this shade of paint-red. Giallo films remain a great as a subgenre paving the way for the Scream films (and American slashers as a whole). Vibe is honestly the best word for this one; it may not reach Suspiria levels of bonkers, but it's good, twisted fun and it looks great. Another psuedo-Christmas horror flick.

  20. I don't love watching abusers either, but a film like that involves so much incredible work from so many talented people. I just don't think art like that is worth forgetting because of the actions of one person, even when they're the titular character (fortunately, he doesn't have much dialogue at all). Everyone has different lines, though

    Red One

I like the premise on paper and the talent involved but the the execution was bland and boring besides the entire beach action sequence that has Nick Kroll in it and even when DJ is the star and producer in this film.. just like Black Adam and Red Notice before that, he seems like he's phoning it in big time.

Honestly I really am rooting for him to bounce back big time in The Smashing Machine because that film is gonna be the ultimate test to see if that could add another 20 years to his acting career and reinvent himself as an actor or not

    Flow - 9 / 10

Golden globe nominated best animated film and vying for a best foreign film nom at the oscars (Latvia)

Its basically about animals fighting for their lives after a biblical type flood event and the main character is a cat. Gorgeous animation, and great pacing with suspensefull 'action' scenes, and the score was great adding to the tension.

While PG, its not a kids movie - i think it would be too scary and possibly boring? Its fast paced, but its got no dialogue, only animal noises. Its not a pixar / dreamworks animals chatting movie. For the most part, it felt realistic with how everyone interacted.

I really enjoyed it. Thrilling and emotional and a breath of fresh air
