The thing that kind of baffled me about United Healthcare denying my claim for a $24,000 hospital admission was that they deemed it was "medically unnecessary" and it was signed off by a nurse listing the reasons why

No disrespect to nurses because they are insanely hardworking and don't get enough appreciation for how difficult their jobs are, but why is it that for insurance claims, a nurse can tell a doctor that they're wrong? I had multiple doctors AND nurses telling me it was important and medically necessary for me to be there, but this woman got to deny me TWICE, even after the hospital's billing department tried to appeal with United for me

 

was it a nurse that worked for UnitedHealthcare or like for a separate utilization review company...???

 

I'm not totally sure. She just read the notes from only one of the many doctors I saw, my vitals, and test results and basically said in hindsight they weren't that concerning and could have been checked during the day

 

I am by no means an expert here but just as a nurse this sounds like the nurse you are talking about works for the insurance company or works for a separate utilization review company, not works as a floor nurse wherever you were being treated

 

Oh yeah I realize that. I just think it's crazy that this one person gets to be the sole decider of me being in crippling debt as if my ER doc, the head doc of the hospital, and a cardiologist were just lying to insurance or something heh.

Either way I noticed that 10 months later, that hospital submitted a new $36,000 claim that was fully covered, and it was very generic and not descriptive. It didn't mention hospital admission but I'm wondering if they just changed some billing codes around to skirt me by. I sure hope that $36,000 claim wasn't in addition to the $24,000 admission . Haven't received a bill for it, anyways

my wife briefly worked from home doing utilization review when our kids were babies and she would mess around with codes and billing and do creative writing to try to get anything and everything covered, but she absolutely would have been fired for it not much longer after she left anyway because the whole thing felt so evil

 

I think my friend might be the only one going to bat for this guy
