The ironic thing here to me is Brand New wasn’t that good live either lmao

That said I didn’t know as much about the limitations of performing live when I used to see them a bunch. Like, it used to bother me that Jesse would shout way more and sing outta his range and wear out his voice. But I now understand that’s partially because it is a CHALLENGE to make low vocals audible at a live show unless you’re in a high quality amphitheater, and when you can barely hear yourself it’s hard to put the same breathy character into your voice as you would on a record

 

when BN was good they were one of the best live bands i've ever seen.

I also didn’t love that the guitars always sounded thin, I do think a band of that caliber / level of popularity could’ve done something about that. If Terrain ever gets to be that tier of professional artist I’m hiring my own damn touring sound guy to tailor the settings to each venue so you hear every note

I’ve really had an opposite experience, the more I got away from Warped Tour music the more I realized that a lot of scene / pop punk bands just aren’t that good at performing compared to big bands in other realms of music lol

 

That has changed over time though. 2010s pop punk bands that I enjoy are MUCH better live than most the bands I loved as a teenager

One example, I don’t listen to or particularly love the Wonder Years but they certainly sound a lot better and tighter live than the pop-punk I grew up on lol

The worst part about seeing brand new was the crowd for me

I literally perform with two amps in stereo, and went out and bought a custom mahogany-body Telecaster, and the 50th anniversary model of a Vox AC15 with a mahogany cab, just so I can have the classic Tele / Vox indie rock tone without having that “sounds thin as paper on stage” problem

 

I got a mahogany Les Paul body in a few days ago, gonna make myself one

Either gonna put my extra p-rails into it (not euphemism) or a dogear P90 (not euphemism)

I found Brand New to be very not good live which was a bummer for me.

I find The Wonder Years to be very good live. Four Year Strong is also one of the best bands of that scene at actually carrying over their sound live. Still friends with creeps though.
