Oh wow, she officially confirms split from Capitol Records and that Masochism the album will be out soon

After all this time, Sky Ferreira won't stray from her vision

She’s not willing to bend, especially after this long. For now, she says Masochism is finished and coming “very soon” but she’s looking for the same spark she had with Night Time.”

“A decade since her seminal album, after a quiet split with Capitol, Sky’s finally emerged from the shadows. In the past few years, she’s appeared alongside Kevin Abstract at Coachella, dropped a vengeful, 80s-inspired single titled Don’t Forget and toured extensively across the States. As we chat, she’s packing for her Australian tour.

She’s ready for her comeback, but she’s determined to get it right. I ask her what it is she’s hoping for in next chapter of her career. “I just want a clean slate and it’s hard for me – like, I’m never going to have that. It’s sinking in that that’s not the reality of the situation,” she says.

“Unfortunately, what would help me is if someone could give me back the last 10 years of my career and my life, but that’s not going to happen, and it’s still very much there for me, looming over me, but I’m starting to somewhat accept that I sort of have to start over.”

While we may still be waiting patiently for Sky to get Masochism just right, she says there’s new music on the way – “at least a song. Even though people are going to be like ‘Oh great, a song, a random song’… whatever. At least it will be the first thing I’ve done on my own. At least it’ll be the first time I’m able to do that.”

 

She’s right about people “Oh great, a song. A random song.” Still, hope it’s good.

 

Even in the interview she can't agree with herself. She says the album is done and "coming very soon" but then says there is new music on the way, "at least a song"... so which is it?

 

more than that, the album is supposedly finished, but the article says she's waiting to get it "just right", which implies it's not finished? i'm confused.

it is nice to read that she's trying to get the rights to her back catalogue. would love NTMT on vinyl, even Ghost.

Leave it to Sky to say Masochism is coming soon in one interview then in another say the situation is more complicated lol, but I do feel for her being in this situation.

combined with the other interview, it does sound like she's mostly finished with it, but doesn't want to release it unless she gets the rights back to the songs over which Capitol currently has control. she did say she's trying to get the rights back to NTMT too, so i'm assuming this holds for Masochism. even if it's a less-fruitful effort than just releasing what she does control herself, i can't blame her for at least efforting to put it out in its "original form".

its gonna leak in the next year then get an official release within a few months

iirc, a number of tracks already did leak from it (like 6 or 7 i think?)

 

ya definitely by this time its prolly mostly diff tho? i see the whole thing + more getting leaked soooner rather than later tho

The new song is called “Leash” and has leaked. I haven’t heard it yet but so far I’ve only heard positive reviews of the song from people who have heard it.
