The debut EP by Queens, New York-based emo band, Career Day, called I’ll Always Be This tackles a wide variety of themes such as the current working environment, substance abuse, mental wellness, and dealing with it all one day at a time. During the span of four crisp songs that span just twelve hard-hitting minutes, Career Day quickly highlight their band’s strengths with a sound that strays somewhere between The Starting Line, Motion City Soundtrack, and Hawthorne Heights. The band is Ryan Maguire (drums), Robbie Levin (bass), Jacob Cutler (guitar), and Desmond Zantua (vocals) and were formed during the pandemic. By leaning into their core influences, Career Day are starting their musical journey on the right foot.

The EP kicks off with “Team Player,” a song about the pitfalls of working in an office environment that is unbalanced, that features some great guitar work by Jacob Cutler. Jacob’s opening riff sets just the right tone for Desmond Zantua to balance out his vocal attack. “Rumors of My Wellness” follows the speedy opener with some hard-hitting drums from Ryan Maguire, while the band rallies around Zantua’s vocals. Lyrics in the chorus of, “I’m running out of things to quit / Rumors of my wellness / Sadly are exaggerated / Even when I detoxify It still feels like I’m picking poison,” paint a picture of a person struggling with substance abuse, while still trying to be a better person in the end.

”Last Thread” opens with a nice fill from Maguire, while bassist Robbie Levin adds in some unique riffs to layer the band’s approach to the song. The song bounces along with great pace and precision. “One Bad Day” closes out the EP on the right tone with some cool starts and stops to the guitar riffing, while Zantua showcases his impressive vocal range on nearly-shouted vocals on the chorus. Career Day have great band chemistry and they display it quickly on I’ll Always Be This. Once Career Day finds a way to go past the artists they are influenced by, the sky is the limit for this talented young band.

Thanks for reviewing this! Just had a friend recommend them buried among a few other bands and this has convinced me to move them to the top of the list.
