My argument would be that I don't think there's anything more inherently "sensible" about a review (or post) saying it's an incredible and one of the best albums (like say that Stereogum piece) vs saying something may grow on you. I find both positions totally sensible on a spectrum of fandom and music experience. Said another way: Moderation of emotion isn't inherently more sensible/right/more likely to be right for one's reaction to art. Each reaction can be just as a real, and one isn't more right/more wrong because of the strength of that emotion. If your enjoyment of a piece of art gets graphed over time, you may see dips, peaks, valleys, but probably never a flat line for something you end up listening to often. I don't think anyone at any point on that journey is more or less sensible. (My second argument might be those experiencing and expressing that ride are probably more attuned to their thoughts and feelings on the music.)

Edit: And this is, funny enough, something that's kind of an evolution of my own thinking on how I view albums/fitting into my musical history/pantheon, etc. over time. Definitely now how I would have viewed things 20 years ago.

ive listened to this twice so far today. cant imagine it will go out of rotation any time soon. none of his others had that kind of immediate hold on me, not even TPAB.

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

looking at that tracklist I see pretty much what I saw back in 2017 which is 3-4 of his best songs, 3-4 just okay and 3-4 of his absolute worst. it's remarkable after the initial excitement faded how consistently the highs and lows of that album have stayed high and low for me. also, wild that you have to imply that album is some misunderstood masterpiece instead of an album that's obviously always gonna be divisive based on its place in his discog? it's probably the least apt Kendrick album to take the holier-than-thou soapbox for lmao

100% this, but I'd even say 4. parts of Section 80 haven't aged that well but it's a lot stronger than a lot of people give it credit for. no masterpiece certainly but the run from that to untitled unmastered was just something special, and the shift afterwards is the way he constructs albums and writes songs is significant

  9. Don't even see an argument for any of his worst songs being on Damn. "Lust," maybe, because of that one part? But he's got some weirdo shit like that on every album lol

TPAB=Morale>GKMC>GNX=DAMN, but all 5 are like a 9/10 or above.

  11. "Yah" is in my personal top five Kendrick songs.
