We really are going to learn nothing from the pandemic, which also puts to bed the myth that capitalism breeds innovation. Capitalism is more about justifying or selling office space than it is about innovation. Where innovation is good for workers and even productivity but bad for office building leases and control over the workforce it is cut off at the knees.

Wfh is also better for the climate, better for commuters who do have to work on site, and much better for parents. But once again we don’t have a party that will even make that case so it’s just going to go back to the good old status quo that democrats love so much

Would love it if people forced back into the office purposely got less done to show it doesn’t improve outcomes hah

Yeah if I get forced back I’m going to chat about the weekend with my coworkers by the water cooler for half the day, fuck it if that’s what they want

It is that and RTO basically being a way for companies to do shadow layoffs. Hence why Elon is pushing RTO for the feds. He wants civil servants to quit.

The last time my company made us go from 2 day to 3 days in the office was because they wanted more collaboration between groups/employees, yet I am still having Teams Meetings for everything and completely ignores that our manufacturing plants are in a completely different state so I can't really "collaborate" with them. On top of that, they did not sync other departments team schedules so the engineering team that I interact with does not come in on all the same days that we do.

I don't want to complain too much on how stupid it all is because I feel like then they will just say well everyone needs to come in five days then.

This makes me think of automotive grade electronic components (among other auto grade components) and while yes there is a some markup on them that is excessive, there is a good portion of the cost that is derived from how much quality control and validation that has to happen for those components. The failure rate on that type of stuff has to be extremely low because you can't have something fail as people are barreling 70mph down the road. Even then it still happens but it would be so much higher if they did not use auto grade components.

on wfh, i do worry about the further siloing off of workers in this stage of capitalism, where class consciousness is further needed and where there is also apparently a loneliness epidemic.

I will never step foot into another office for work as long as I live, WFH for life

yeah in theory you'd think that companies would embrace WFH if it meant they could save money by leasing less office space

my job still does hybrid. I'm a state worker and the union has been negotiating with the state to officially make a permanent policy for over a year now (right now they just keep extending the pilot program). Right now we can only do 2 WFH days per week and the union wants it to be more expansive but sounds like the state isn't budging on lifting that cap. With the governor election here next year I am a little worried if this keeps dragging on with no permanent policy in place it'll be a lot easier for the next gov to take it away if they want to

Wfh really shows how much policy is so vibe based that they never think about how it affects actual human beings

I will say it's probably harder, though not impossible, to talk to your coworkers about compensation or other bullshit going on in a manner that's not tracked by the company when you are WFH. It can feel isolating at times even though I am an introvert and a generally anxious person that now thrives at home and has no issue presenting to 100 people over a video call. Overall the pros will always outweigh the cons for me but I can see the argument for how organizing your workplace could be far, far more difficult if you're not in person.

My company didn't even have the gall to do RTO to reduce overhead like others are doing. they just outsourced most my department's remote work to a contractor in Mexico, and did gradual layoffs over the course of a year until most of us left jumped ship because we knew it was a dying department, and we were being forced to train our replacements.

All this talk of WFH being good makes me sick. Won't somebody think of management's self-importance?

In my industry the amount of jobs that have been outsourced to low cost countries such as India and Mexico has been absolutely insane. Traditional roles that I would have not expected to get moved there like finance and engineering (mainly electrical but seeing it all over) has all happened over the past three years.

If companies really wanted people to return to the office and not have turnover because of it they would offer commute dispensation and less strict dress codes. I worked in a t shirt and basketball shorts for 5 years. I ain't changing that because I am doing the same thing in a cubicle 10 miles away.

Funny that we’re talking about WFH cause this video popped up on my feed this morning lol

I do think all office jobs should give employees the option of either WFH or in-office/hybrid. There truly are some (sickos) that prefer being in-office and more power to ya, but that shouldn’t be the only option
