And that's why you always leave a note.

What's wild is having this explained to you multiple different ways, very eloquently, and still shaking your head and being like "nah - witch hunt." I hate that shit.

I don't understand why so many people don't agree that having a musical platform is a privilege. I's always like 'well they served their time' or whatever it is... yea, even if they did, they get to integrate back into society again, but why do they automatically get their platform back? It's a privilege and a honor and I fully believe in getting that taken away from you.

And yes, if you're at the top of a tour and you actively decide that someone deserves that platform and privilege after whatever they're done, then take the lumps that come your way from those that are upset about it. You're entitled to do that, but don't be lame and argue and call everyone wrong who disagrees. Just accept that you've decided that whatever happened doesn't deserve de-platforming and own the criticism more maturely.

Don't really know a single thing about Oceano but goddamn is reading the dismissive responses to very valid concerns from multiple people frustrating as fuck to see. Bonus points for using god to try to justify touring with fucking Attila lol.

Oceano acting like they’ve never heard of the Attila controversies and I’ve never even heard a second of Attila’s music and primarily am aware of them for being abusive and problematic. That’s quite telling.

For the life of me, I'll never understand how this specific tour of small club shows is the kind of opportunity that Adam mentions at the start of this meltdown essay. I'm willing to believe that he truly didn't know anything about the controversies (people find out about Dealer all the time and Fronz/Attila will always have people around willing to cover up their dirt), but Adam's reaction to that information is on him. This is no one's fault but his own and I hope he isn't shocked when the blowback from this affects his impending solo career.

If Brand New comes back and has a successful tour we're so cooked. And I wouldn't be surprised considering how things have been trending over the past like year or so.

    Sigh. This again.

Skiba’s whole schtick is being dark and edgy. Pair that with an interest in Nordic runes and the Occult, and you’re on shaky ground.

Do I wish he would be more conscious of the imagery he uses and the media he promotes? Yes. Do I think he’s a Nazi? No, but he needs to do better in terms of the company he keeps, which he has. He cut ties with both Douglas P. and Boyd Rice many years ago.

I will say, his support of military and police is disappointing, though I feel it may be inherited from his parents, who are both veterans. Skiba himself is also a volunteer firefighter.

His friendship with Boyd Rice is indefensible. I believe this can be attributed to Skiba being an industrial music fan and thus, overlooking problematic behaviour from Rice. The same can be said for Trent Reznor. Does that justify it? Of course not. Boyd Rice repulses me and I'm disappointed in the many artists that have had an association with him.

Douglas P. of Death in June is a little more complex. Douglas is an openly gay man and members of Death in June are Jewish, so he most certainly does not fit into the traditional Nazi category. Douglas claims that his use of the totenkopf and other problematic imagery is an effort of “reclamation” - hence the pride flag embroidered with a totenkopf he displays onstage. Clearly, this effort of “reclamation” has not been successful. A bigger issue is the vagueness in Death in June’s lyrics, especially with the amount of WWII references.

Interestingly, such behaviour has been documented decades before. Joy Division, Sex Pistols, Queen, Throbbing Gristle, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and New Order all used problematic imagery that was stolen by the Nazis, but originated from the Occult, Satanism, or Paganism. It was shocking then and it's shocking now.

Personally, I think it's all pretty dumb and I wish artists would refrain from using such imagery.

TLDR: Skiba is not a Nazi.

Every year I read some version of pre-emptive panic over Brand New potentially maybe touring again and every year it gets sillier. If it happens you will not be forced to go. And who's "we"?

It’s a perfect day for letting go... Supporter

I remember reading in genesis p-orriege’s book (singer of throbbing gristle) that they and Ian Curtis from joy division would go shopping at antique stores for Nazi stuff because that was just fashionable in the 80’s for 20 year old punks

That band should stay dead, it would be bad if they came back, but every time they come up in this thread it feels like a “running out of things to be mad about” type discussion. They’re dead, they haven’t announced a tour, and there are only rumblings from “oh a friend of a friend of mine says they’re coming back” posts on Reddit. Like what’s the point of constantly re-litigating this?

Almost certainly not, mostly because I have no desire to go to expensive, hyped up shows surrounded by dudes who look like me.

The hypervigilance around this particular band continues to be deeply strange and I think an expression of displaced guilt and maybe denial over the wider toxicity of the overall scene.
