  1. You ignorant slut. It's just a goal, to save $401,000. Once you have that you can retire.

this was the situation my brother and his wife were in when they had kids. his wife made more money and it didn't even make sense for him to go to work at all. now that the kids are a little older and in school he is back at work.

My wife and I make what was previously a very comfortable joint income, but this year taking on a mortgage in Los Angeles and shelling out $2,200/month in daycare for a new baby has us very tight. Meanwhile the film/television industry is so fucked up right now that I’m more worried every day that my job, or at least doing my job for a good salary, won’t be anywhere near reliable enough to carry me through to retirement. No degree and not much experience in other fields so I spend a lot of time thinking about what the fuck I’d do if my company shut its doors

come do our backyard. it's the only thing that wasn't entirely redone in our home. We're planning on paying a professional to do it so it can be graded and drained, planted with native plants and grasses, and irrigated as efficiently as possible. We're estimating like $20k :(

The childcare price differences are fascinating. When we were first looking in 2019, the places we looked at ranged from $950ish to about $2000, and the $2000 was, like, top tier shit, a really good and somewhat exclusive montosorri school. We ended up at a cheaper Montessori for like $1175 a month I think. And it was great, he really did awesome there.

we had a very old retaining wall in our yard before the fire that split the backyard into two levels, and eventually it collapsed. I was getting quotes where the cheapest was $40,000 to repair it. I ended up doing the work myself with my uncle who had a tractor, and we trucked in as much dirt as I could afford and made it into a hill with just a small retaining wall near the house made out of stones from Lowes or Home Depot

I am not handy at all but it came out pretty damn good and didn't cost a whole hell of a lot either

when I say small retaining wall, I mean SMALL - it was only maybe 4½ feet tall and came out a few feet from the house. it was only there because there was a basement window in an odd place and I am not a hill creator / retaining wall builder
