  1. If you're making 250k a year as a couple, without seeing your budget, I also hope you feel comfortable! The idea of making a quarter mil, every year ... whooo ... man, I'd ... ok, I'd put it mutual funds and still buy blank bulk t-shirts and wear the same shoes and jeans I have for years. I'm so boring.

bumping it up I have to find the sweet balance where I'm being responsible but not giving my wife any ideas about shoving me down the stairs or anything

I am too is the thing! We don’t have many extravagances lol. We only just had a car payment start this past month because my car died a month before our baby was due. We don’t do trips or buy clothes often, I rock the Steve Jobs wardrobe of never ending long sleeve solid colors. Shits just crazy expensive out here. We are working back some debt that got built up while my wife was unemployed for basically a year, but otherwise a very boring budget. Just MA being MA.

  6. I hear this from a lot of people too. That even getting in the door is very hard. A few people were laid off a few months ago and I checked in with them last week, one said he has applied to over 100 jobs. Nothing so far. Lives in NYC, so that's a real tough market, but I've heard a lot of overcrowded roles. I see it in any position getting opened too. Makes me terrified of losing my job to be honest. Just, not a fun spot to be in and makes a lot of people feel underemployed too (also won't be seen in the CHARTS!). Best of luck! Hope that spins in the right direction soon.

My wife applied for easily 500 or so jobs while she was unemployed. And it was so much bullshit and bad faith behavior. Felt like a borderline miracle when she finally got something.

it’s more peak-y that recession-y *pushes up glasses*, but after the peak comes….Will be interesting to see when this recession hits if Trump will get blamed for the job losses or praised for the deflation.

Memories are nice, but that's all they are. Prestigious

It’s cheaper for my wife to stay at home with our kid than it would be to pay for daycare and for her to have her old job again which is just insane.

Do that shit yourself. Plants are relatively cheap and labor is (monetarily) free.

Ah, gotcha. You can probably still do a lot of it yourself, that’s one place where we’ve saved lots of money. My wife likes doing landscaping, I like doing manual labor, and my FIL is a retired farmer so he gives us guidance and we execute.

That’s how it was for us. My wife worked at a nonprofit when we found out we were having twins and the math list wasn’t mathing. At best we would break even and it didn’t make sense for neither of us to spend time with them and net $0.

In the immortal words of Lucky Boys Confusion:

“All I ask is you play somethin’ good!”

Seriously though, if I could make it work financially where I give up my desk/email job for a gig where I make the same pay lugging heavy shit around, I would gladly.

My wife doesn’t understand why I prefer using the rake or the broom to the leaf blower or the vacuum, and part of it is how I grew up, but it’s mostly just that the former makes me feel useful while the latter just makes me feel like part of the machine.

  22. Boston is an outlier though even on a national scale, only NYC and SF really compare. Plus $5,500 would go a long way in Chicopee!

Yeah, our mortgage is only like $2500/month in a 2500 sqft house in a desirable area of Raleigh.

It would be more if we bought it now though, it’s gone up in value by about a third and interest rates are much higher.

I was so close to a complete and total dream house in Merrimac for like $4,800. Still mad.
