there are parts of a great movie in here but overall it didn’t fully come together for me, some truly disturbing scenes/images though

    The Straight Story 4/5

absolutely loved this. yes it’s a PG movie but it’s 100% a Lynch movie. what a great performance by Richard Farnsworth and what a terrible one by Sissy Spacek.

An awkward dude and his inevitable girlfriend share one of those special nights and then deal with it terribly. Reviewing this movie I've been reflecting on a recent night I had, luckily i'm not 20 and it's not my first rodeo and I didnt make any catastrophic handling errors but thats all experience will teach you. Vulnerability never gets easier and can be even harder with age, at 35 there's an expectation to be jaded and not to be so naive to believe in magic, the prevailing wisdom says do not try dumbshit, be smart and do not risk the pain of vulnerability. I say no pain no gain and the pain ain't that bad anyway and the gain is worth the risk.

Back to the movie, it's so funny. I like your shirt. Which one I'm wearing 2? Later the second shirt is revealed to be a T Shirt that says “the time is now”.
I havent actually been there but for you dude I was like, fuck, dude, been there.
What day is it? Sunday. Oh God, well TGI Sunday because this motherfuckers an alcoholic.
Great fresh jokes the whole time, jokes that feel like they were accumulated in real life by a weirdo who knew they needed to be saved for this movie. The ending goes a little too far wrapping things up, it's not unearned but it's unnecessary.

Back to dumbshit and the beginning of my most romantic friendship. Oct 2007 Brendan, David (RIP) and I are going to Underoath at the RoundHouse, the 3 tall boys enter into the crowd and create an express train to the front. Another tall young man with a dirty blonde swoop joins the train. The train arrives at its destination and it's a fun night to remember. The night ends and we part ways.

Parramatta station 3am Jan 1st 2008: After my first big NYE in the city and getting halfway home, im now waiting for the night rider bus and there's an hour till it come. A familiar swooped man approaches me and says he remembers me from Underoath, oh cool I say and we chat till my bus comes.

Febuary at Castle Hill RSL: Guess whos there, Its Tim thats his name and we are hanging out all night. Didnt get his number.

The Next Week again at Castle Hill RSL: Oh shit it's Tim, I get his number and tell him we are going to the city tomorrow and he should come.

Saturday afternoon My bedroom: Dad enters the room and says there's a Tim on the phone. I answer and its Tim. He says I didnt answer my phone. I explain I was sleeping allday. He explains that he went through the phone book and called all the houses in my suburb with my last name and asked if we were still going to the city tonight. We did and we've been friends ever since, started a band with Brendan and traveled to different countries. Thanks Tim for being a weirdo.

I think I was also supposed to tell the more recent story with the girl and how I still don't know what will happen and what dumb actions I'm considering but we've got another movie to review. (for those wondering its not the same night as the ketamine post in the bird thread although that was a good night too.)

    Minority Report (2002, Steven Spielberg)
I went in hoping to see Steven tackle the surveillance capitalism and behavior modification tech that our society is just now starting to suffer the effects of. Despite the setting it's not interested in that, it pays lip service with some junkie dialogue but It's a cop story that asks a much less interesting story about revenge killing and individual corruption. It doesn't want us to question why we shouldn't create a department of future crime and laughably suggests that the future police would only use lethal force on each other. Some of the action scenes are let down by an over reliance on CGI but the core of the film is Tom running around and its always a thrill to watch him do that. There's one scene in the bedroom where he sprints full speed across the tiny room with the form and ferocity of a charging gorilla and I though fuck yeah great work Tom.

  19. Scream 3 - 7.5/10
Is it the best Scream movie? No. Is it my favorite Scream movie? ...Also, probably not. But on this rewatch, it seems to be the coziest and funniest, splitting the difference between the realism of the first film's reveal and the second film's over-the-top nature. After the sixth film, this is probably the Scream sequel with the most untapped potential. Bring Jay and Silent Bob back from Scream 7.

    Scream 4 - 7.5/10
This was in my bottom two Scream films upon my last rewatch. It still might be, but I appreciated it more this go-around. Pretty easily one of the more brutal installments, but also where the reveals really start to get pretty silly. Nowhere near as traditionally "fun" as the third film, but the hospital sequence alone helps this one stand out and bumps it up a notch.

    Frankie Freako - 6.5/10
Shockingly fun, unpredictable, and somehow able to hold its premise way longer than it should, even if it ultimately feels slight compared to Psycho Goreman.

    Alien: Romulus - 7.5/10
A second watch pretty much just solidified what I really like, and what I really don't like, about this film. The ending felt less disconnected from the rest of the film this time, but a lot of it does feel like a series of random setpieces that are admittedly pretty cool. The writing is fine albeit scattershot, performances solid if a little forgettable, but Alvarez continues to direct really tense and visually arresting horror. I still wish we got Ridley's third Prometheus film instead of a greatest hits reel, though.

    8mm - 7/10
Such a strange movie. It's obviously aspiring to recreate the look at feel of Se7en, but with Nic Cage on autopilot and Joaquin Phoenix playing a metrosexual(?). It's honestly pretty solid and packed to the gills with fascinating performances from character actors like James Gandolfini and Peter Stormare, but just as you think the film is ending, there's an extra half hour where Cage becomes proto-John Wick? And makes the extremely unforced error of almost abandoning his family? Wild stuff. Schumacher really sent it on the Middle Eastern music in this one.

    The Crow (2024) - 4.5/10
Not quite as bad as I expected, but it escapes any justification for existing other than some admittedly cool action sequences. Skarsgard is fine as a mostly forgettable, Jared Leto Jokerfied version of the titular character, and Danny Huston plays the villain role just as well as ever, but they're ultimately working with an undercooked script filled with trite dialogue that does nothing exciting or fresh with the material. It's a shame that the film is closer to being completely mediocre than bad in a way that is at least interesting or unique, because at times, visually, it looks pretty good.

    Sid and Nancy - 8.5/10
Even after watching this film, I don't know much of anything about the Sex Pistols, but I do know Alex Cox has something special.

    The 4:30 Movie - 6.5/10
It's not great, and it really feels like the zero-sugar version of Superbad, but for a Kevin Smith film, it's undeniably charming with a few big laughs in the back half. Smith's writing is all over the place, but he's still a relatively talented director, and the cast grew on me by the end of the film. It's nice to see him step (mostly) out of the View Askewverse once again.

    Eyes Wide Shut - 9.5/10
This year, give your partner the gift of complete psycho-sexual humiliation.

    A Different Man - 9/10
Really loved this. Some moments of pitch-black comedy, directed and scored more stylishly than perhaps any other film I've seen this year. Reinsve is a little wooden in her role, and the film probably does jump the shark a bit in its final sequences, but Stan and Pearson have incredible chemistry. As dark as it can be, it's likely one of the most fun films I've seen this year, and I can't wait to share it with others. I'm not entirely convinced I've seen anything quite like it.

    The Apprentice - 8/10
I made the right decision by watching this before election night, because otherwise, I don't know that I'd be able to stomach it. I certainly wouldn't blame anyone now for steering clear, but I have to admit, it is a fascinating look at the transformation of a privileged person into one of the most volatile Presidents the country has ever seen, along with the man responsible for his worldview. Strong may be reprising his role of Kendall Roy a bit too heavily, but Stan is electric in yet another role this year, and the whole thing feels like a documentary on how to actually sell one's soul. A true American horror story.
