That just means HBO paid a ton to get exclusive rights and probably holdbacks for other revenue streams

Dune Prophecy has pretty good production design, and the first episode does a good job of introducing what's happening and the stakes of it all. Curious to see where this goes from here

Didn’t love the first episode. Just kinda felt like a generic show and that they forced in sex/drugs.

Does it really take place 10,000 years removed from the movies, but the fashion is the same?

Tbf the latter was one scene and really quick and not graphic and the show is based around a planet that is basically one giant drug den lol

is this series based on a book or anything?

Yep 10,000 years in the past, not very long after they defeated the thinking machines. The invisible body shield thing for hand to hand fighting is also used during this time as well

“The new series Dune: Prophecy is based in part on Sisterhood of Dune, a 2012 novel by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. This book, part of the extended Dune universe created by Frank Herbert’s son and his collaborator, explores the origins of the Bene Gesserit, a powerful religious and political order central to the Dune saga. The series is set about 10,000 years before the events of the original Dune novel and depicts the rise of the Bene Gesserit and the aftermath of the Butlerian Jihad, a pivotal conflict in Dune lore where humans overthrew AI domination.”

excited to watch interior chinatown - read the book earlier this year and thought it was fun (even if How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe was better)

  13. my friend has been listening to the Dune audiobooks and when I showed him the movies he said the second one does a poor job of setting up the next sequel

I think at the time Denis was likely thinking it would be just the two films, or at least didn't want to suggest it without assurances a 3rd one would be made, but based on the success of the 2nd one that made it likely they'd do Dune Messiah

The first book doesnt really do too much setting up for the next book either tbf.

yeah it honestly felt like HBO gave them notes that they needed drugs and at least one sex scene.

  20. Hm, I dunno, if they read the Dune books ... they ... have a lot of drugs and some very graphic sex. Not sure why that would be an HBO thing given where that series goes.

    Not here. Isn't happening. Supporter

I’ve only read Dune and there wasn’t much sex stuff that I can remember but it’s a sci fi book so you just expect some weird sex to happen. I think the complaint though was more that it felt forced in, which yeah can be an hbo thing.

Yeah I haven’t read the books and it’s only one episode but it just felt shoehorned in and like it was out of a different show/universe. It looked like any random dance club in 2024.

combined with A24 exclusivity (sorry Paramount/Showtime), they've got a lot of leverage in the game.
