Recently I was able to catch up with lo-fi indie pop artist, SOLAK, to discuss everything that went into his latest single called ”Pandora.” Not to be out-shined by the new track, SOLAK has also released a new album called Atlas today. In this interview, I asked this talented artist about the themes expressed on Atlas, his experience working in the studio on the new LP, as well as what he hopes his listeners will take away from his music.

The concept of expressing the ineffable is central to Atlas. How did you approach creating music that feels deeply personal yet resonates universally?

By not trying to make themes bigger then what really happens to me or fragments of the stories at least. I tried to be stay close to real doubts, feelings, experiences and so fort. And if it wasn’t possible to capture it with words, I tried to use my words as brushstrokes.

Ocean Sound Studios in Norway is known for its unique atmosphere. How did the studio environment and the collaboration with Steven Van Gelder influence the album’s sound?

It had a huge impact. We got inspired to lift up our focus to go deeper into sound choices. We tried out a lot of stuff, took our time to dig in. In the meanwhile we could get lost in watching the sea all day.

With Atlas now out in the world, what do you hope listeners take away from it? Is there a song you’re most excited to be heard by listeners?

I hope I can touch a wide palette of emotions in a listener. We are a lot of stuff, us humans. Not just one particular feeling, idea or concept. I hope people can feel all those things when listening to this record. My current favorite would be the dreamy song “Selene,” as it’s one of the albums songs with the most beautiful string arrangement, made by Joppe Bestevaar. I’m so proud of it.
