I actually don’t ignore that, I think blink modelled this behaviour and All Time Low copied it. Both bands have contributed to a culture that normalised sexualising audiences they knew were underage. We can acknowledge that as a product of its time instead of pretending it didn’t happen. They don’t have to be “cancelled” for it but I don’t think it’s out of line to recognise it

 

I think that’s what sticks out to me; it’d just take a “we were incredibly immature in our younger years and deeply regret our behavior during our live shows and towards our fans. We want to acknowledge these mistakes and apologize for the impact it had on our fans and reiterate that we have since moved on from that stage in our lives” or something to that effect.

By not saying anything, they’re not even recognizing that it happened when they’ve got plenty of documented footage to prove it did.

 

After the show, a sweaty Hoppus discusses how while Blink still might tell the crowd of their general love of breasts, they no longer specifically encourage the women in the audience to reveal them: “I just get super bummed-out when 13-year-old girls show their boobs. Not that it excuses them from apologizing, but they were already backing off of that behavior in 2000.

 

I’d love to see All Time Low to do the same.

 

Who's revising history? I haven't seen a single person defend Blink's behavior in this thread or imply that All Time Low was the first to act this way.

I'm not a fan of either band, but I appreciate seeing Blink start to recognize and change that behavior (in some ways) as early as 2000 considering how integral it is/was to their image, at least coming up.

Yeah this is the problem right? Immature 90’s early 20 year olds who are rich as hell do stupid shit and young bands hear it and think it’s acceptable. No one was thinking about the effects of the monoculture back then.

 

I sort of feel like one aspect of the double standard of considering Blink's behavior to be shtick but not ATL's is based on what you think Blink's audience was. It's funny when it's dude bros, it's predatory when it's females.

For all of Mark's general goodwill, I wish he would do one single thing for the scene he helped build to be more progressive.

 

Yeah, Blink was always cartoonish with the problematic stuff they did, like Tom being the voice of Satan saying he wanted to have sex with children or them making gay jokes. It never really came off as them actually having those feelings, just incredibly immature people messing around.

All Time Low was way more aggro and serious about getting gross with their fans. As others said, like many pop-punk bands, they took all the wrong lessons from Blink.

 

Also, not discounting anyone's thoughts on the matter, but a majority of blink's "behavior" was in regards to having sex with people's moms, dads or dogs... clearly over the top jest. I can see the point that other bands were probably influenced in the wrong ways by this and that's a shame.

graduation is still one of the top selling/streamed albums right now, so I’m not saying it would be good, but if he hit that nostalgia button, people wouldn’t give a shit about the neo Nazi stuff
