I've been slacking on getting my masters for years but one of the reasons why I finally started is knowing we were having a second kid and that I'm going to need the roughly 8-10K it will add to my salary every year to afford having said 2nd kid lol

 

I started watching Reds yesterday, but then my wife came home and said she wanted to watch it with me but not then, so apparently we're gonna finish it at some point

shit - if that's the one that Wharf meant then I spent several hours watching the beginning of the wrong movie.....

 

I'm also pretty staunchly anti-debt if I can help it. Went to CC part time in part to try and avoid student loan debt, and then when I transferred to a university after my associates was done, I chose the cheapest one possible, and ended up graduating with only like 21K in student loan debt. Have never bought a car with a loan until 2020 for my wife's car and it was used so lower price. Mortgage debt is completely worth it though IMO, especially the whole locking in an interest rate for 30 years, really insulates you from stuff like what has happened the last couple years and house/rent prices. And you also have the option to refinance to a lower interest rate when the rates go lower, and actually lower your mortgage payment. How often can you do with with rent without having to move?


Of course, being a homeowner and trying to be more environmentally responsible has lead to me actually taking on more debt lol. We got solar panels on a loan and a heat pump on a loan. But like I think wharf said, being able to push and negotiate for better prices and better loan terms when it comes to debt is huge. As nice as the people working with you can be, they are at the end of the day trying to make a buck, so they will not give you the best terms up front. I got 8K knocked off the solar panels, and for the heat pump I pushed until we ended up with a 3 year payment plan with 0% interest. We really only needed a new AC unit and I was prepared to go with just a new AC unit for cheaper so we could just try and pay for it up front, but I asked the guy to give me cost estimates on heat pumps and replacing our gas furnace with a more up to date one. The best package was a price that I scoffed at, but I told him hey our preschool payments are ending so if you can get me a good monthly payment on this, we might be in business. He tried to get me with a one year loan that had interest and i was like there's no way that works for us. Came back with a 3 year monthly payment plan and no interest lol. That's where it also pays to do some research and know when you can press these guys a bit. We did this like early-mid april, usually a time when things are slow for them because no one's putting new heaters in in April, and most people haven't fired up their AC units to find out they don't work yet. So you can take advantage of the slower business times for them and get a better deal for yourself and etc.

Also no one is being taught they themselves are evil because of something someone else did at some other time! I can still feel ashamed that something happened without thinking someone is saying I was responsible.
When I say America is an evil country I shouldn’t have to spell out that I don’t mean my 5 year old daughter is evil. I don’t think we should back down from talking honestly about history because the bad faith arguments from the right are taking ahold of some people.

So true. I’m making more money than I thought I would and I don’t live lavishly at all but expenses always go up to the point where I can barely save. And by the time I do life does something like hey it’s time for you to need a new car or home repair
