Except Bernie has gotten things done. There are a ton of great populist things in the myriad legislation that Biden passed in 2021-22: drug price negotiation, climate change policies, the massive amounts of subsidies and giveaways in the ARP that arguably caused the inflation that lost Dems this election. He staffed a ton of major positions with Warren/Sanders staffers. It was about as far to the left as they could get it with 49 and a half senators, and certainly more than Biden needed to do.

Separately: it seemed to me that Democrats were more scared of Jewish people (and Jewish donors) than Palestinian people. I’m sure they tried to modulate — it’s probably a top three reason she didn't pick Shapiro — but they severely fucked up by not figuring out a different message. And morally the outcomes have been monstrous. With that said, I would submit that this is a “lesser of two evils” scenario and that Talib should have recognized that as a public servant.

 

Yes, that glib three word response is the sum total of what I have taken away out of the last two days.

 

It is one very, very, very small reason why some folks didn’t vote for her.

Most people didn’t “shift away” from Democrats. That generally implies they moved towards Republicans, when we already know that they just didn’t show up. Democrats’ elitist messaging didn’t appeal to the folks it needed to and their policies weren’t heard. Harris’ inability to create a cogent, populist argument about why she could represent a meaningful change was worse at driving people to the polls than Trump’s fearmongering.

 

Also, I hope the proper takeaway is that it was a rejection in the sense of "you are not offering what we want" and not "we do not want what you're offering"

Like take abortion. Dems correctly identified that it is an important issue. But I think this election showed that you can't just make some middle aged dude care more about abortion than he does the economy. So you gotta offer more. And also gotta figure out the messaging -- dems *did* offer a better deal on the economy for 90% of Americans but it didn't matter because messaging got screwed up.

It also feels disingenuous when you ALREADY are in office and abortion rights got taken away under your watch and yet nothing was done. I think it would have played better if Trump was in office.

I’ve just gotta hold onto the hope that quite a few “progressive” policies were passed this year, some in very red states, that we’re not completely doomed. I’ve long said that if you sit down with a republican you can often get them to agree with your policy as long as you don’t use the triggering buzzwords with them. This was just a total rejection of the Democratic Party and what they (don’t) stand for
