It took me until 32 to reach financial stability, even with copious amounts of help and support from my parents along the way, and two months later I’m already falling extremely behind

    Economy

I don't know about millennials specifically, but gallup's economic index hit the highest point it had in 20 years in January 2020 before Covid hit.

  4. What does it mean when consumer prices are at 120% of the January 2020 number while disposable personal income is at 110% of the corresponding number

I’ve got a good job and my wife has a good job and we make above average money and we’re both Union and my health insurance is great, and i still think the economy is bad. I still am in the precarious place of not being able to afford a loss of income, not being able to buy a home, having to fork over insane money for childcare if we have a kid, knowing a medical emergency could fuck us up, seeing people in my city slide into homelessness, etc. I don’t think it’s “vibes-based” to say I feel bad about the economy. I felt bad about it under Obama, felt bad about it under Trump as well. The things I’m saying I dislike about the economy are things that are worse for me and the people around me than they were under our parents.

And i am among the more securely situated people i know. I think it’s a symptom of a crazy-making society that so many people can just say “huh, markets look good thats the real metric.”

  8. There is a serious risk that a huge investment bubble is building up, funded by increased debt and government subsidies, that could come crashing down if returns on capital for the US corporate sector from AI and hi-tech do not materialise. The reality is that, apart from the profits boom of the so-called Magnificent Seven of hi-tech social media giants, the average profitability of the productive sectors of US capitalism is at all-time lows.

Yes, the mass of profits is very high for the Magnificent Seven and profit margins are high, but total profit growth of the US non-financial corporate sector has slowed almost to a stop.

And remember, it is now well established that profits lead investment and then employment in a capitalist economy. Where profits lead, investment and employment follow with a lag.

If investment growth falls, then the expected productivity growth will not materialise.

similar situation. i can't remember every when middle class families weren't concerned with housing costs, healthcare costs, childcare costs, college costs.

i do wonder how much young people not turning up for the Dems because they've seen a genocide for one whole year on their phones skews the young people for Trump swing.

I think you’re misunderstanding what I personally believe about it vs. what I’m saying I think the political lessons that will be learned by policy makers. I think they’re going to be more likely to undershoot the spending needed to offset the recession than go big, which we know will elongate the recession and thus suffering.

I don’t personally believe that Biden’s big spending is what caused inflation, but a lot of other people definitely do and the politicians running for office are going to remember how they got punished for inflation and be too scared to go big because of it. I hope I’m wrong!

I feel like that has to be a part of it. Hopefully there will be some polling of non-voters that can give some insight, but given that young people don’t pick up their phone…

The one point I can see against it right now is that huge white male 18-29 swing we saw on that one poll….maybe I’m stereotyping but they seemed to be the group that would be least likely to care much about Gaza enough to not show up to vote because of it. But I haven’t seen much data so.

Those motherfuckers will do what those motherfuckers will do. Logic or what the voters want very obviously based on how the Democrats just campaigned are essentially non-factors. If the choice is between telling a bunch of people they’re wrong when they say they feel bad about the economy because you are scared that a bunch of people who hate us and don’t share our interests are going to respond inadequately to economic downturn (can you imagine?!!?!), OR being honest and trying to pull the people who agree with me that shit sucks into the same struggle, the choice is really obvious imo.

Well now I think you’re the one treating it like an either/or scenario when it doesn’t have to be haha. I think raising economic literacy is a good idea and that an effective messenger and party would be able to do that while also effectively communicating what is still wrong with the system and what policies they will do to make it better for everyone, reduce inequality, make homeownership easier, etc.

  19. imo if you have to "communicate" why someone's life is actually better, you've lost. did ya'll see the number of people googling if Biden dropped out the day of the election?

  22. people go the grocery store and know it used to cost 80 bucks for what they buy for their family, and now it's 120.

they know they can't ask for a raise because they don't wanna put their neck out in a job market that is this tight, and offshoring/automating even what used to be safe "email" jobs. they know health care could bankrupt them. insurance companies will do all they can to never pay out after you pay in for years and there's no one fighting for them. childcare? forget about it. loans? please, an old judge said no. do they have stock? over 50% of the country does not. the idea of building wealth there is meaningless.

this is what people know. this is why they say the economy is balls.
