my take is you take over the Greens and kick Stein out. Forget about national races for now, and build a base locally and on the state level.

For decades the Greens have put most of their focus on trying to show up in presidential elections enough to get equal time. I think they need to pivot and all their effort should be focused on eventually getting the first Green member of the House, and building from there.

Right this is the more elequant version of what I was trying to say lol. Local chapters of parties are very vulnerable to take over, but there def needs to be some coordination to it.

Think you’re aiming too high. Don’t make the same mistake of focusing on house and senate and presidency races. You need to get prior experience in governance and you need to start with your local school board or library district or city council and go from there. Those people can build a name and go to state house and senate, and then off and do something like attorney general or Secretary of State or governor and then the US house. You gotta build a bench before you can go for House

Was trying to explain this to some people that were "shocked" and devastated this morning. And trying to gently explain the need to get out of a few little social media bubbles that painted it like Kamala was going to walk right in as the first women president, because the signs were so very obvious. (I felt bad pointing them out to my friends regularly because I didn't wanna be that debbie downer of a friend, and that's probably on me to some degree.)

Had a sobering thought this morning, sat here with coffee just trying to think through shit, read some texts from friends that came in overnight, and try and take stock of what I can control, what I do have agency in here. A big thing I need to tell myself, and some here might disagree, I dunno I'm rambling now, is that I think I need to let myself be happy when I'm happy. And feel my actual emotions. 2016-2020 I went into a dark space because I didn't let myself be honest. I felt I couldn't be happy, couldn't let anyone see me happy, for fear they'd judge me or think I'm a bad person for even smiling during a time like this. I can't do that again, I don't think I'll make it out if I do. But I also can't push down the anger and frustration and pretend I'm not feeling those things too.

It's just utterly depressing, 100% predictable, and absolutely did not have to be this way ... there was such an obvious path to at least giving the 2020 coalition a chance to return/hope for a better tomorrow. And they shit on it.

If 10% of the bullshit this admin wants to do happens we could be looking at a recession I fear half the country will memory hole as being the GOP's fault (stares in every other election/cycle my entire life) and double down on fear, hate, and the alienation of people I care about.

 

That is exactly what I am saying. Rebuild the Green party from the ground up, start with local races, with the eventual goal of getting someone on the House. Then after you reach that goal build up from there.

 

Couldn’t agree more with letting yourself feel happy. That was my biggest problem for many years while I struggled. I feel much better equipped for the future now than I did in 2016 when I was first dealing with my addiction in the midst of that election

And I think that's not something yet accounted for. The right wing news/media apparatus (that is turning out a new young generation of voter!) moved away from it, Dems embraced it, and it's created these two disparate worlds of how and where people consume "media/news" and you can see what that's doing.

 

Also as a reminder a great way to get that experience without having to run for office is to apply to serve on your local parks and recreation board, DEI commission, planning commission, etc :)

 

Honestly about your emotions is important for sure and it's something I'm thinking a lot about. Slightly off topic but not really: that Ethel Cain post about people being terrified of being earnest and joking around about everything in their lives has resonated with me a lot and stuck with me and part of why I'm just letting myself feel "this really sucks" right now and I'm sure a different day will be different. It's an unsurprising result but it doesn't make it sting less today but yeah I agree that we just have to let ourselves feel how we feel. I don't know. A lot of thoughts in my head.

 

I might delete later in case this is misinterpreted, but
I have guns I inherited from my biological dad when he died at age 20. My grandma that I see on holidays has them in her basement. My wife wants us to keep them and I’ll probably need to register them to keep them legally. I’m pretty anti gun, but she’s terrified, especially since we live in a very red county.
