Pusha, when you factor in his work with Clipse, is an easy case for current top 3

I think this would be a more relevant point if the quality trailed off over time, which I mean, he hasn’t hit the highs of HHNF but his most recent projects (particularly Daytona) have still been very good

really think my answer is Lupe Fiasco. every time - and I mean every time - I intentionally focus on the wordplay of his verses, he never fails to completely blow my mind.

I really need to do a deep dive of his early tapes, he was so unstoppable from like 2005 to 2009. Haven’t explored anything since Lasers other than Tetsuo

check Drogas Wave at least. that's his all-time best, probably.

  8. Food and Liquor might crack the top 15 of the artists I mentioned previously? But as a whole, I don't think he's it.

Tyler doesn't have the club/radio mainstream banger(s) needed to put him in that convo. Although his discography is fantastic regardless.

DOOM died too early but it could've been him all the way.

Hi Hip-Hop Thread, I would like some education pleaseseeeee

I don't like Young Thug's music and don't follow him at all, but can someone help me with why we should be happy that he is "FREE"? He did bad things, yes? We don't like gangs and violence and we agree those are bad things, right? Is it because the potential punishments would have been extreme? It is a racial unbalance issue?

Anyway, just looking for some context, thhanksssssss

it is absolutely a racial thing. if you care about Black art and the protection of artists, then you should care about this trial. they tried to frame him over song lyrics going back to before the events he was accused of committing. other artists from other genres don't experience this stigma, no movies or tv shows either -- let alone those things aren't brought to court as ammunition for a massive trial. yes, obviously gang violence is bad ... but it also exists. it exists and it's often how people from the projects survive. and the fact of the matter is that hip-hop is/has always been a vehicle for Black artists to document their community's struggles and oftentimes another way out of the hood, but also a way to bring awareness to these issues. the subject matter of rap lyrics will always be "auto-fiction" and if we want the art to stay true, then we need to take this in stride and protect its artists.

would love for others to chime in here. these are only my thoughts

oh wow, yeah I had no idea about anything related to lyrics, that's fucked up beyond belief and obviously super racist

Only thing I will say is he’s on camera hitting a woman and also a known transphobe. Surprised to see the like for him in here still.

edit: maybe not on camera but still

Jeeze, I forgot about that too, likely because I don't follow him.

OK so, I still think he's a bad person with a ton of issues and don't want to support him, but on the very specific situation of his court case, there is clear racism in play that is a clear systematic issue

Yeah, I mean there is nuance in the Young Thug situation and really with all rap, you kind of have to be willing to confront some hard truths about the artists behind the music. Likely moreso than with other genres, but this too is a byproduct of societal conditions and systemic issues within those communities. Kind of reminds me of the saying “don’t miss the forest for the trees.” It irks me a bit when folks come in here looking to condemn listeners of a rapper who has done something wrong in the past. Deliberately not defending any artist in particular, and I will never tell anyone they shouldn’t “cancel” an artist (the transphobia stuff sucks obviously), but I will say that within this genre, there is veritable and unfortunate big-picture context for, like, why this shit is so prevalent.

Definitely not telling anyone not to listen to him and I agree with hip hop there is nuance. Just wanted to remind the thread he’s not the greatest role model.

Fair, though people shouldn’t idolize any artist at all, really. Artists are people and people are complicated. That one instance of transphobia is likely an indirect, bad response to the extreme homophobia he experienced years earlier in his career for wearing a dress as his album cover, his friendship with RHQ, him publicly saying he calls his male friends “lovers,” etc. In a different world, maybe all of that would’ve seen widespread acceptance instead of disgust, maybe he could’ve been more of a positive role model and made better choices, but who’s to say? Even if he retconned it, the dress thing was still a MASSIVE cultural moment. Are we allowed to compartmentalize these things? Or is it as simple as we should judge him for the bad stuff? It’s complex IMO.

I don’t think anyone in this thread has ever tried to position him as any sort of role model
