I assume this is what that "big story" was that was being rumored last week? And the focus from KIrk and those others on the 'edited audio' accusations defintiely makes it seem like this is what they were referring to. But yeah leaked audio of Esptein only, and coming from the source that it is (he of FIre and Fury fame, seen as a salacious/gossip mongerer type I think), makes me hesitant to think this will gain steam in the next few days.

I currently have the class right now that I will have first period Wednesday morning and one of the kids asked me when we'll find out the winner and I told her that I do not believe we will know the winner come Wednesday morning when I see them lol. The only way I think we know is if Kamala is up decently in Georgia and NC. Because otherwise we're gonna be waiting on PA and the fact that their mail ballots can't be counted until after the polls close. Michigan is big here too...if Harris wins MI, then she only needs one of PA/NC/Georgia to be over 270. So there is a world that exists where Harris wins MI, then either Georgia or NC announce she wins and thus we don't have to wait for PA's count. But I don't think Georgia is particularly fast at counting either?

Granted this is assuming other less swing states go as expected (FL amd ME2 to Trump, Nevada/NH/NE1 to Harris, etc), but...if Trump wins MI, Harris needs PA and one of NC/GA(PA and AZ wouldn't be enough), or needs to sweep AZ/NC/GA to win if Trump wins MI AND PA..........actually just checked the math on this, she could win just NC and GA and win, even if Trump took MI/PA/AZ. That scenario would be perceived as a true racial realignment I think, as it would almost certainly be assumed black voters helped carry her over the line in NC and GA and white voters abandoned her in PA/MI/AZ in that scenario.

 

what do you think the chances are of tomfoolery afterwards overturning the results...?

 

Lower that what many people seem to think, but way higher than zero....and anytime those chances are higher than zero, it's very concerning lol

I know I can't get all of them, especially the 9th graders, but my AP gov seniors every year I get a few of them that tell me they're excited to get involved, and I definitely have some activist types every year that I know are gonna be involved in protests in the future (And some that had already done so during the George Floyd and Pink hat protests lol), and that's always a great feeling when the kids that want to be involved are using what I'm teaching them to be more knowledgeable on stuff and what not. Like we've been doing the legislative branch this last week and have been getting to things like what impacts how congressmen vote and congressional behavior and there's some things to definitely be cynical about, especially with gerrymandering, and it's been fun hearing their reactions to stuff I've told them about congress or videos i've shown them (their reactions to the Kavanaugh hearing were great to see), or etc. But we talked about log rolling and pork barrel spending and riders, and we talked about how leadership uses that stuff and other tactics/threats to strong arm members into voting with them and etc. I showed them some of that website that tracks pork spending and in 2019 they had a march madness style bracket for "worst pork barrel spending" and the kids really loved the one on there that was like $250K for "combatting Goth culture" to an organization in the suburbs of Kansas City lol.

Anyway, I think knowing all this stuff can help fight cynicism in some ways but also breed it in other ways. I Was gonna type out a long example but I think you get my point. It's also really hard to be a gOv teacher in the age of Trump--I do my best to stay "neutral" but, there's only so many neutral things you can say about the guy before you really just have to say "yeah what he's saying is wrong and he's lying" or "yeah that's illegal and he probably shouldn't be getting away with that". And that last part is really frustrating--teaching the kids about things like rule of law and just...not having it exist in any meaningful way in the age of Trump. Sure is fun. (not that it ever really existed the way it's supposed to in theory, but still...Trump just flagrantly breaks the law constantly)

But yeah if I can inspire or help even just get a few of them involved in any way, it's a great feeling. Last spring I told my AP Gov kids hey there's campaigns going on, they're always looking for volunteers if you're interested, reach out to their campaigns etc, and this fall one of them came back to tell me her and another girl did some phone banking for the Dem governor primary here over the summer, so that was great to hear.
