whew, long dayyyy again between studio and work

studio was great though. The base instrumentals (drums, bass, and main layer of guitars + all guitar effects) for 5/8 songs are like 97% edited and fixed. One of the songs I think is 100% and the other 4 can get those last little tweaks done all in one session.

Only 3 songs left still need a decent amount of editing but we started with the most complex / sloppiest songs first so those 3 should easily get done in the next two Tuesdays, and then we’ll do one more session to give every song a last “once over” to make sure it’s perfect and ready to move on to vocals / vocal harmonies and background guitars/piano

I think singles out on streaming in time for our January tour, and album out on streaming and vinyl in time for our April tour, is still a very doable timeline - but I gotta keep up my 1-2 sessions per week pace to make sure we don’t start to lag behind

I know it seems crazy to be editing an album so much, like to a non musician it probably seems like I’m making my performance very artificial. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned about the studio versus live it’s that a recording amplifies every mistake. And much like autotune, edits / comping takes can only enhance a good performance - it can’t fix a bad performance, like you can’t “edit” a sloppy or buzzy guitar note and make it sound clean, and if the timing is all over the place it becomes less and less possible to smoothly edit it. It WOULD sound choppy and artificial if the recording wasn’t very close to accurate.

The studio engineer has said that although I tend to rush and be slightly ahead of the beat when I’m doing difficult stuff, the difference between me and other guitarists he records is I’ll be consistently ahead of the beat by the same 5-10 milliseconds - so it’s a lot easier to edit that and still entirely keep the “vibe” of what I played than if you have to adjust every guitar hit forward and back different amounts haha.

99% of these “errors” are so minor a fan wouldn’t notice it at a show and at least 75% of them, the average fan wouldn’t notice on the record either. However it’s one of those things where, just because the mistake wouldn’t be noticed by most folks, doesn’t mean that fixing these mistakes is pointless. It does make the big picture sound more crisp and professional even if a fan might not specifically hear the reasons why, the way that I’m hearing “ah shit I was late on the pickup there and it made the rest of the riff sound like it came in early” or “I thought the guitar was ahead but actually the drums are behind here” etc

that said. I probably won’t record live again. My music isn’t simple, and it’s also a lot more structured and intentional than a jam band, so trying to get exact guitar riffs exactly right and exactly on tempo when I’m basically doing lead, rhythm and effects pedals all at once, for a whole song without stopping, is next to impossible lol. I can do it well enough for live but the studio is just different. I’m lucky every part of every song has at least one take where I got it mostly right, we didn’t have to re-record anything, but even after picking the best takes it’s still been a lot of editing to get all the instruments exactly locked in with the tempo and with each other. It *actually is* easier to record 10-12 takes of every single 15 second guitar riff or part of the song and get it right initially, than to just record the whole song live several times and go back and edit
