Conclave (Edward Berger, November 1st, 2024) Movie

I figured I'd make a thread ahead of time for this since a lot of awards watchers are saying already this is probably a lock to get nominated.

Vatican set conspiracy thriller. Directed by Edward Berger (All Quiet On The Western Front) and written by Peter Straughan (The Goldfinch, The Snowman, Frank, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Men Who Stare At Goats) based on the 2016 novel by Robert Harris. Will be distributed by Focus Features in the US with an 11/1 in a limited release, going wide a week later.

Starring Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, and John Lithgow.

 

One of my most anticipated for the year

 

Oh wow this looks great. Some of those shots look stellar.

Reports I am reading from Telluride from LA Times, Variety, ect are all saying this the biggest standout of all the potential Oscar season films featured, and that "is this Ralph Fiennes year to get the Best Actor trophy?" is the most common conversation among critics being had at the festival.

This looks great. Fiennes would play a good Paul VI. Would love to see a film about Archbishop Lefebve & the 1988 excommunications.

 

Gold Derby (an online aggregate for award show odds and predictions) currently has Ralph Fiennes as the favorite to win the Oscar for Best Actor for this.

 

- Definitely awards tailored but still mostly really good.

- Fiennes is always great and Oscar-worthy. I was thinking surely he couldn't be the runaway favorite but yeah right now - given the Challengers news - I guess my picks would be Fiennes, Justice, Garfield, Omika, and....shit I guess the guy from Hundreds of Beavers lol.

- I need Berger to sneak behind Volker Bertelmann and just turn the volume down like one, maybe two notches. Other than that the score was fantastic.

- Lithgow was surprisingly bland in this. It didn't seem like he was on the same page as everyone else. There's an intensity threatening to boil over in everyone's performances and he's just kinda there.

 

how is Tucci in this?

 

He's good but is definitely second fiddle to Fiennes both performance and story wise. Definitely don't think it was nomination worthy if he's getting that kind of hype.

 

Oh yeah there's also some really outstanding shots throughout this.

 

Right now for the award watching sites it seems like Fiennes is the early favorite for best actor and Culkin is the early favorite for supporting actor for A Real Pain.

 

usually goldderby, which is the best of those sites, is great for nailing the nominations but usually kinda off for who actually wins other than obvious chalk picks

 

This ruled. I rarely think this about a movie but what an incredibly written script

 

Thought this was very good.

Berger doesn’t go overboard with the crazy shots, so the ones he does use really stand out — Tucci on the staircase, and overhead one of all the umbrellas.

 

I wonder if there's really a secret pope hotel

 

Doesn’t come out until December 20th here in Oslo, ughhh

thought this was just okay. that fiennes - who has been better in no less than like 20 other performances - is the front runner for best actor from this is a bit baffling.
