Never heard about this before. Maybe Brian Cashman shouldn’t be complaining too loudly about the Astros still?

You mean the Yankees? Chris Young was the one that brought the Apple Watch thing to the Red Sox, he got it from playing for the Yankees the previous year.

But seriously I fully believe all teams are ‘cheating’ to some degree. Some more extreme than others.

the Astros deserve shit because they got caught and the players mostly said “yeah? and?”

I think I’ve come around on the Stanton HOF case. Earlier my thought was: “he needs to add more to his legacy, even beyond 500 homers; he needs 55-60 war,” which felt nigh impossible given health and DHing and all that

maybe it’s just that I like and respect Mike Petriello, he gets into it more in the comments and I think on other tweets. Essentially, I don’t really find any value in being a “small hall” proponent. It’s good to celebrate players even if they’re not inner circle all time greats. And 500 homers is 500 homers. I feel really fine with there being clear agreed upon benchmarks that gets a player in even if they don’t hit some war threshold

Also, I like to think about generations of players. Stanton debuted a year before Trout and two before Harper, who are pretty obviously the poster boys for this current generation of players. Can you tell the story of the last 15 years of baseball without talking about Giancarlo Stanton? I really don’t think so.

A hulking mass, hardest hitter of balls until Judge (I assume he’s passed Stanton for peak exit velo but idk), NL MVP, most homers of any active player

since debut, min. 5000 PA, every hitter above him in OPS+ is going to the hall except Jose Bautista

get to 500 and he’s in imo

I agree with basically all of this. The way I think about WAR with hall of fame discourse is is it should be used to bolster the case for guys who don’t have the traditional accolades, whether that’s big round counting stat numbers like 500 homers, or MVPs/cy youngs etc. But using a value stat to justify excluding a very famous very good player from the hall of FAME just doesn’t make sense.

I just don’t think it’s a lock he gets to 500. I really hope he stays healthy and plays 3-4 more years but can’t count on it

Consider how the OPS+ is the same and that era was so insane for offense. I was watching the 2000 all star game the other day. Posada had a .447 obp and he was 4th in the AL. Darin Erstad had 144 hits at the break. Tony Batista finished that year for Toronto with 41 homers and 114 rbi lol.
