Four conclusions I came to from the Jags game vs NE:

1) Doug’s gotta be calling the plays. There’s been a lot more camera shots of him actually flipping through the playsheet, covering his mouth etc lately and it can’t be a coincidence our game flow has been much better lately. We are calling the same amount of short misdirection / lateral movement focused, simple pass plays - it’s the same west coast playbook - but we are calling them at much better times and mixing in well-timed downfield shots, which is where I have a HUGE issue with Press. The same playbook can be good or bad depending on whether you do or don’t know how to set up opponents’ tendencies to open up big plays.

Doug actually understands how to USE cheeky misdirection plays when they’re not expected to take advantage of the defense cheating a little bit / blitzing too much, whereas Press treats it much more shallowly - “let’s settle down our QB with a few easy yards” without considering how bad that can backfire when the defense knows you’re not doing anything else.

2) It’s not just Tank Bigsby who ran over the Patriots defense - it was really Walker Little. I swear every single Bigsby run that was eye catching, if you rewind and watch the play again, 90% of those you’ll see Walker Little bulldozing somebody out of the way. There’s hitting your run fits, and then there’s actually generating movement and clearing gaps and you saw Little repeatedly do the latter. I’ve been saying for years that Cam Robinson is mid, overpaid, and the only justification for that to me has been “well he’s a very physical run blocker who can handle the stamina / toughness battle in the trenches”. But if Walker Little is that too, I see no reason why we shouldn’t keep him in even when Cam comes back and see if he can’t be a less mediocre pass blocker than Cam. It is Little’s contract year, give him a chance to earn an extension that might still cost less than Cam. Feel a little guilty saying this but the Cam injury might have been a blessing in disguise for a team that needs to shake up their line but was unwilling to do so otherwise.

3) Brian Thomas Jr is straight up better than Christian Gonzalez. He owned him at the release point AND at the catch point repeatedly. It is very promising to me that BTJ can line up against one of the best young CBs in the NFL and school him. Multiple well contested routes that BTJ got separation and took the ball from Gonzalez even though Gonz got a hand on it.

4) overall, good on the Jags for sticking with what was working. If Bigsby the only guy running confidently, give him 20+ touches. If BTJ the only guy reliably getting open downfield, give him 10+ targets. It’s clear who our real playmakers are and if Doug is really calling the plays I love his paradigm shift toward actually using his studs and not trying to “force” spreading the ball around.
