The Silence of the Lambs - 9/10

I hadn’t seen this in many, many years but does it ever hold up. one of the best

  4. It's What's Inside - 8.5/10
Incredibly stylish and fun take on the body swap genre, like Bodies Bodies Bodies mixed with a pinch of Talk to Me. Spooky enough for the Halloween season, funny enough for the non-horror folks, and just enough inventive hand-holding to help audiences keep track of everything without making them feel stupid. David W. Thompson brings such a genuine charm to his role here. I wish the ending gave us a little more to chew on, but it's a minor complaint about what is otherwise one of the best straight-to-streamers I've seen in a long time. A total blast.

    Mr. Crocket - 6.5/10
Even when it stumbles on tropes or lack of character development, Mr. Crocket is still a Black, Nightmare on Elm Street-inspired fever dream filled with practical effects and hallucinatory creature designs, so you probably already know if this is for you or not. Elvis Nolasco's performance alone is worth the price of admission. Lots of bloody, unsettling fun to be had here.

    Oddity - 7/10
I really love Damian McCarthy's style, both visually and the way he builds such tense stories. This one does almost everything right, lending the audience just enough mystery and ghoulish imagery to string them along until...it lands with a bit of a thud. Most of the film's parts are in the right place, but in retrospect, it feels like it lacks just a bit of depth and/or connective tissue. Still, considering how much I enjoyed Caveat (and this not being far behind), I'll gladly see whatever McCarthy does next. A unique genre director and visual storyteller that deserves an audience.

    Calvaire - 7.5/10
Watched for Chorus.fm's Horror Flick of the Week club. An acquaintance told me this one was fucked up a while back, and he was not lying. Calvaire feels somewhat shocking and straightforward at the same time, giving knowing nods to the audience before each perverse, predictable beat. But delinquency aside, what really stands out about Calvaire is how good it looks and how well-directed it is - a 20-year-old film that truly could be mistaken for a A24 slowburn that slowly but surely burst at the seams by its end. Did I mention it's also a Christmas movie?

    Psycho Paul's Film Festival - 7.5/10
As someone who's sat through Things on three separate (wonderful) occasions now, I can truly say that Psycho Paul's Film Festival is another level of lost and found shot on video trash. A collection of "trailers" and scenes so unbelievably incompetent and knowingly hilarious (in a Tim and Eric way), you'll start to question if any of these movies might actually exist. Forget what you know and prepare to leave changed, as weeks later, I still can't make heads or tails of it. I have never seen anything quite like Psycho Paul's Film Festival.

    They Live - 8/10

    Lost in America - 8/10

    Big Brothers - 7.5/10
Come to this Youtube short film for The Spoonman Mike Mitchell, stay for big boy representation and an unbelievable fight sequence with the brothers' father (played by Eddie Pepitone). Funny stuff!

A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child - 5.5/10
A Nightmare so mean-spirited, gross, and grotesque, you've almost gotta respect it - especially as the franchise continues to cross the line into self-parody. Following The Dream Master's lead, The Dream Child is even more nonsensical than its predecessors and features the least likable cast of teens yet. Still, it's hard to ignore even more uniquely inventive death and dream sequences, especially when they continue to incorporate practical body horror, animation, and matte paintings. Freddy Krueger chasing the presence of an unborn child wielding his own powers around an MC Escher staircase is likely the moment this franchise either totally taps out or peaks, depending on who's watching.

    Spooky szn theatre watches:

Speak No Evil - 5/10 Strikes a fascinating balance between being utterly hilarious and eerily repellent that I really enjoyed.

Never Let Go - 2/10 Thinly veiled messaging about generational trauma aside, it was actually pretty generationally traumatic the way the generational trauma generationally traumatized the generational trauma.

Terrifier - 1/10 This is not a movie - it's a boring YouTube video from 2013, with no plot and some added gore. Zzz.

Terrifier 2 - 3/10 Now this was a movie! It had structure, a plot, and even some characters with emotional depth (such as... teenage girl who is sad because her father died, and... teenage boy who is sad because his father died)! Was it a good movie? No. But was it a movie? Yes! There were even some genuinely funny moments too! But,, it was too long!

Terrifier 3 - 2/10 Better than the first, but not as good as the second. The shower scene with the roommate and his girlfriend is exactly what I think should happen to every single True Crime podcast host. The funniest part about seeing this in the cinema was when a middle aged woman a few rows in front of me began tutting and shaking her head during the opening scene to let everybody know that she disagrees with murdering small children.

Salem's Lot (2024) - 2/10 Cheap. Laughably bad at times. Never lets the audience get to know any of the side characters, so there is absolutely zero payoff when they all start to turn. A frustratingly bathetic ending. No juice!

Smile - 3/10 Never got around to this before because the premise seemed awful, so I was surprised by how seriously it takes itself - especially given how derivative it is of so many better movies that came before it.

Smile 2 - 5/10 Have to give this some credit for being bold enough to challenge the original. While the plot and premise are similar enough to the first movie, it is way less superficially cerebral and way more fun! Still can't get over how incredible Naomi Scott is here.

Carrie - 10/10 Yeah, that's the stuff. Being a rewatch, I was worried that knowing how the final 30 minutes play out would lessen the impact - but no, it’s still just as heartbreaking.

One of the recent gems of my project is My Cousin Vinny. It is just the appropriate amount of cartoonish Joe Pesci, just a few years before he would crater with stuff like Eight Heads in a Duffel Bag.

We Live In Time - 4/5

Heart breaking, but lovely at the same time. Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield put on phenomenal performances. The movie also made me want to try the British Jaffa cookies so I ordered some to ship to the US.

  11. Rap World - 8.5/10
It shouldn't be surprising that one of the funniest comedies of the year is an hour-long Connor O'Malley YouTube video. O'Malley excels at portraying a very specific kind of guy that we've all experienced, lurking on the fringes of society, but here, he expands that vision to a very specific but relatable vibe: how it felt to stay up all night at a friend's house, partying and recording music, in the late 2000s...as a 30-something. This an experience I am grateful to have had myself, minus the 30-something part. Surreal and unhinged in a way The Lonely Island almost never could be as parts of this almost feel like a horror movie, largely given to the film's found footage component. O'Malley is following closely behind Tim Robinson as the next King of Alt Comedy, but Eric Rahill and the Podcast About List guys kind of steal the show when they're on screen.

TNT is currently airing The Lost World: Jurassic Park and it’s some weird extended cut that I’ve never seen before. After the opening scene where the mom screams it cuts to Jeff Goldblum’s character in the subway but in here it cuts to some boring board room scene talking about all the lawsuits first. Wild that this movie has existed for over 20 years and I’ve never seen anything except the theatrical cut on any physical format or on tv before

Scent of a Woman is arguably the worst film I have suffered through in this project. What school cancels all classes to have a trial against the witnesses of a petty prank? Pacino's histrionics are well-known, but they are even more cringeworthy than you can imagine.

Hook was a bore. I was surprised how many of my friends and colleagues had fond memories about it because I had always heard how bad it was. Don't promise Peter Pan and then keep it for the last few segments.
