I know there’s frequent rumblings of him being a Zionist and liking shitty people. But I think it’s strange to say people like his work because they’re “funny”. I like it because they’re well-crafted stories about marginalized people that doesn’t judge them for their circumstances.

 

I admittedly haven't seen any of his movies (planning to fix that!) but it's less than ideal

It’s not a great look, but I think it’s along the lines of people with bad politics can make great art just like people with good politics (Adam McKay) can make shitty art. I get the hesitation, but his films are very much worth watching.

 

Yeah, it’s really fucking shitty and hard to come to terms with sometimes, especially from him and his filmography for some reason. Like I love S. Craig Zahler’s films, but it ain’t surprising.

Exactly. The same goes for the warmth and empathy that The Florida Project had for the forgotten. Red Rocket was more of a comedy, but again it was showing people that are never allowed to shine.

Kubrick made two explicitly antiwar films and everyone says he was pretty conservative, so I guess you never know.

A lot of directors are rich guys that probably came from rich families but again, sometimes shitty people make good art and sometimes good people make bad art

- I thought the fact that Neon attached Madison's name to the marketing was a bold statement and yeah they knew what they were doing - she's stunning throughout this. Given all that she did for the role, the fact that Baker saw her small part in OATIH and projected it to this without any sort of audition is incredible work and the kind of shit I'm obsessed with.

- Gorgeous film. So well shot. I was like "man I wanna live in this world" and that world is just Coney Island.

- Yuriy Borisov is really good. Quite a few bits of curious framing in scenes with him being the focus of the shot but not the scene.

 

Just got out, absolutely loved this. The parts in the middle were the most entertained I've been in the theatre in a long time. Really bummed to find out this guy's a zionist shithead tho.

Mikey Madison really should get every award.

 

Just caught this tonight. Jesus Christ, instant classic. My favorite ending I’ve seen in a long time, felt like a throwback to a whole different era of movies. I love this because there were multiple times the audience reacted in a way where you could tell they were learning the wrong lessons. Lol

 

As for Baker and his politics, there’s a degree to which i believe dumb people with dumb politics can make great art in spite of themselves sometimes. I think people can make things without even knowing what the thing they’ve made actually means.
