Release My Mind, My Garden Grows

chorus/most of the lyrics kinda ruin it for me. Last 30-40 seconds sound great but that doesn't make up for the rest of the song.

Chorus is catchy, but I have no desire to play it again. Oh well.

It is growing on me but the chorus is probably going to take the longest to grow on me out of any part of the song

    just one of those ghosts

Some cool parts to this one. The last minute for sure. Tim and Grant and Spence sound great.

The drums going halftime at the end highlight how weird the other choruses are to me—something about the happy-clappy driving drums and Aaron singing "guilt guilt guilt" makes me unsure about how I'm supposed to feel. Something definitely feels off. Too bad that's the main hook of the song.

got a couple more listens in and this song is dope. going to avoid overplaying these singles to preserve the full album play through. Super excited to hear the whole thing start to finish.

This video is exceedingly silly. tim’s nude horror scene, Chris the nicest dude in the world playing a down and out guy at the bottom of the bottle, beer belly grant, and aaron with the clown makeup. i don’t think videos matter much anymore but that was very funny to me.

sums up underoath since the return for me (minus a few bangers)

a minute of the song I want to listen to as loud as humanly possible, surrounded by 2.5 minutes of meh

was better than I expected based on the clip

I'm having the same problem, the drums and the lead riff feel completely incompatible. My brain can't make it work

“hey man a straight forward shuffle should do”

“……. nah, i’ll melt their brains instead”

one of the high points of the post reunion for me has been aaron unhinged with drum parts. on my teeth intro, no frame, and this song are great examples. as a drummer i love it.

  10. Yes yes yes, as a drummer completely agree. Aaron's drumming is iconic and he has been getting weirder.

The drumming is great from him per usual, it's the guitar part against it that's throwing me off. I'm good with weird patterns and time signatures and what not, but this to me borderline doesn't work.

  12. I found the video particularly unsettling or creepy in a way they haven’t been since the Define The Great Line ones. Made me nostalgic for those.

i also thought the house looked like the writing on the walls set, but instead of a killer abstract narrative it was aaron with clown makeup on the back of a pickup truck for no apparent reason

It has its pros and cons but I think it’s interesting that this seems like the first post-hiatus song that really threads the needle between sounding underoath-y (albeit later oath) and the more innovative side of modern metalcore. It almost reminds me of house of protection or 156. I liked Teeth but despite being a more tasteful use of pop than erase me, if somewhat a bit behind the times, it was still pretty straightforward. I like how chaotic and innovative this is even if it doesn’t explicitly reference the parts of old underoath I miss as much as I’d want and still does some things I really don’t like. On a related note I hope one day we get another oath album that uses the synth to create a really vivid and cohesive atmosphere like DTGL-Ø did. Chris still brings it every time but that element has been sorely missing - that loss paired with Tim’s simplified riffing are a tough double hit to endure.

There’s definitely a common thread amongst these new tracks so I’d imagine we’ve got a good glimpse of what the record will sound like (and if we don’t then that probably means the album isn’t very cohesive). I think these songs show that the band can adapt and stay relevant, it brings em closer to that pantheon of bands that can just sorta do what they want, stay fresh, and still keep a high baseline.

also, it feels really nice to have a proper, not-simply-a-performance music video again.

I think Spencer and Aaron sound better in the BMTH song than anything released post-rebirth.

Revisited And Then There Was Nothing one last time and it has grown on me. It’s quite a banger after all. Feels good to hear Tim’s riffs on the forefront again.

Edit: oh and speaking of unhinged, I love Aaron’s drumming on that one as well. Dude seems to be having a blast destroying his drum kit lol

it would *never* happen but something about seeing this has made me really want an underoath album in the vein of stuff like erra and invent animate lmao

Invent animate are one of my favorites and are a slight exception but lord knows that part of the genre could use a vocal shakeup a la Spencer. All those dudes sound the same.

jt and marcus (and if we're talking cleans, jesse too) generally make up for it by utilizing their fairly wide ranges pretty well and also happening to be in the bands with the sharpest songwriting in that sound anyway, but otherwise completely agree. i think it would be a beneficial shakeup for both the band themselves and that particular lane of core

feel like thats particularly made evident on the silent planet song spencer features on where he blows garrett out of the water

If you haven’t heard And Then There Was Nothing yet, I think what you’re saying is even more true of that song… it feels like a great mix of their classic sound and more modern metalcore.

That’s bc it’s good! The breakdown at the end is sick, the chorus is catchy, and I personally love the drums and guitar together. If you didn’t hear the guitar by itself it wouldn’t feel as weird when the drums came in. Now that is a polyrhythm!
