I don’t have anything to add to the conversation, but I just want to say that I met Deon when we were both on a cruise a couple weeks ago and he was incredibly nice.

 

song is out overseas, and oof, these are really bad lyrics. instrumentally it sounds a lot like Godspeed and A Whisper & A Clamor. Matty's vocals somehow feel less-forced here, but they're incredibly generic. i guess they're primarily taking the nostalgia route and just making music that sounds more like their older material, which is super disappointing.

 

Yeah, sorry if it's harsh, but there is zero identity to this without Stephen. At this point I would trust AI to write a better Anberlin song than Anberlin, which make sense since Marty sounds like a computer with all the autotune and how processed his voice sounds.

 

agreed. controversially, i think the execution is tighter on this song than Walk Alone, but Walk Alone at least made more sense to release when it did if the band was trying to have Matty sing on a song that sounded like old Anberlin. that should've been the only song of that nature they put out. this one just feels a bit lifeless and unnecessary. if this is the direction they're going, can't say i'm excited in the slightest. why listen to new songs that are derivative of older and better songs, unless you just really like Matty's voice (which the vast majority of us don't)?

 

i'd maybe still have some sense of excitement if the band's instrumentals weren't similar to their older material, but i think this is too safe a space for them and they're probably gonna be making music like this for a good while.

 

I guess they are just gonna milk whatever nostalgia they can on tour and then release lifeless singles to keep their name relevant in the streaming algorithm.

Taking a hard turn toward so many things I dislike and the kinda bands I don’t enjoy.

 

After they got so much modern rock buzz with the FGD re-record, I'm surprised they didn't try to lean into more butt-rock-y stuff sooner.

well anberlins set got cut short to technical difficulties on 20 years of tears so i believe this is a one off make up show? i don't believe its a tour, but don't quote me on that, either way i might check it out, its not too far from where i live plus you cant go wrong with locals showoff & hot alice (allister/august premier)

 

Yeah he co-writes for a bunch of butt rock stuff nowadays, he was all over the last ADTR album and many others.

Instrumentally this is a fun (if very safe) throwback, but it really proves how much of the band’s greatness was Stephen specifically. It’s actually kind of shocking how faceless they sound now.

New song was forgettable, local band type of material. Yawn. Nothing to add that others haven't, this has been pretty unfortunate to witness. Especially after the last two EPs which might be my favorite Anberlin material ever? Tough to top my love for Cities but those EPs rule (I will never listen to the "Vega" version again).

 

Possibly, but a big part of that is that his lyrics and vocal writing would be MUCH better, not just the vocals themselves.

 

Wow. I’m SO sad about High Stakes knowing it was an old instrumental from like Cities era. It sounds so good and I wish we could’ve eventually had Stephen on it

 

Oh man... I can imagine this song absolutely popping off with Stephen on it.

 

Song sounds huge, and these guys always know how to write an earworm of a chorus. But damn I really wish I could get onboard with how Matty sounds.

 

so per IG, the instrumental is literally an unused idea from years before Matty joined (included in a folder of unused ideas Joey sent to Matty just for listening and not necessarily writing to). this absolutely would've been better had he not wrote/sang over it (but also maybe don't release ideas that sound exactly like your older stuff because they are your older stuff?)
