Has anyone checked out Stream? It just dropped on VOD yesterday.

Based on the plot alone, it wouldn’t usually be something I’m interested but most of the Terrifier crew worked on it and David Howard Thornton played one of the killers. They’ve been promoting it pretty heavily and Cody Leach gave it a pretty good review.

Unfortunately, I thought it was pretty bad. Basically had all of the bad parts of the early terrifier movies - bad acting and lower production and while some of the kills were cool, seeing Terrifier 3 less than a week ago made them seem tame. I also thought DHT came off like he was doing a diet version of Art.

We had family stay with us for a few days last week because of Hurricane Milton so I was sidelined a bit but I’ve basically been able to watch something spooky every night.

It’s horror-adjacent but I rewatched The Guest last night and always love the Halloween setting.

And I did VHS Beyond this past weekend.

It’s typical hit or miss overall but it had some good segments. It’s got me itching to watch 1 and 2 again and I’ve still never seen 99 or 94.

  4. I was thinking of showing them Pearl before X anyway as kind of an experiment, but you really think X is that much scarier?

And neither of you found Bones and All scary? It's definitely too gory for my friend group but even the non gory bits I think might be too much for them, some scenes were just so intense

  5. 94 is so good

X is just so much more indebted to the Texas Chain Saw Massacre aesthetic. The kills are definitely more graphic. I don't think Pearl is nearly as bloody or gory, more of a character drama/psychological thriller than anything.

I'm with @ChaseTx on Bones and All - it's bloody, but that's to be expected considering the premise. Definitely more of a horror-flavored coming of age thing imo, not particularly scary.

What are the good VHS? I want to revisit them but can't remember which ones are worth it lol.

  7. I think they're all pretty much worth lol Viral is definitely the worst and 2 and 94 are the best imo, everything besides of those falls in the "consistently pretty good for a found footage anthology" range

I’ve only seen the first two and only remember the first segment from the first film because how could that not stay with you?

    hate my favorite band

Glad you brought this up because I almost downloaded it last night, but I had a feeling I wouldn’t like it.

Love The Guest. Absolute classic in my book.

OK thanks! I figured revisiting them all might be worth it, but as I've seen ranking in here, I couldn't remember if any were of that "don't bother watching again" variety.

Haha, yeah the first segment is the one that always comes to mind out of all of them. And then one that might have been Korean that was pretty nuts.

I hated 99 so much I've completely ignored the two newer ones

  12. Yeah, the Cult segment in V/H/S/2 is still a franchise highlight.

  13. 99 was a step down from 94, but Flying Lotus's segment was disgusting and incredible

Viral was the one that was so bad for me that I basically stopped caring about the franchise. That admittedly is kind of dumb because it's an anthology series so there's always a good chance that a couple of the segments work.

I don't think I watched another one until 85 because of Derrickson and Bruckner's involvement.

  16. I've only seen the first VHS and only once but I've seen xx twice

The Live and Let Dive short in the new one would rule if it ended when he crashes back to earth.

From there it just feels cheap and repetitive as hell. Sometimes it's okay to do more with less and a tight 10-15 minutes of terror in the sky is more than enough to justify being in the movie.

  18. I say Viral is easily the worst, but the spanish monster puppet segment rules and so does the skateboarding segment so what do I know tbh

maybe I just really have a soft spot for found footage and anthologies lol

I didn't realize Kate Siegel directed a segment in the new one. that kinda makes me want to check it out

  20. I also LOVED Kids vs. Aliens. If you enjoy the slumber party segment in V/H/S/2, definitely check that one out on Shudder.

It's such a great concept because it's actually okay to swing and miss because whatever follows could be a homer.

I still kind of hope we eventually move into anthology territory with the Halloween franchise how Carpenter originally kind of envisioned it would go.

    Written by Flanagan too.

Reminds me -- since I got Shudder for the month, I need to FINALLY watch Hush.

  23. I know he was thinking about individual movies in the Halloween universe, but imagine an anthology with like three separate but slightly interconnected stories about things happening in Haddonfield. Could be very cool.

Exactly. That would be so great.

I admired what DGG and company did in their trilogy with how the Michael stuff just hovered over Haddonfield.
