  3. I don't think my purchasing habits have slowed down, but I'm fairly new to the game. I still buy cds, probably more in number than I do vinyl, the latter is just so much more expensive that the amount I've spent on either is about the same. I think I purchase used from Discogs just as much as I do new from Target/UO/etc. tbh I like vinyl more for the aesthetic than the sound quality which I can't really tell the difference anyway. I love big cover art and cool color vinyl. I've got them all sleeved, which was a bit of a process, but after that, putting on a vinyl and popping in a cd are about the same for me. I only use Spotify in the car because my car stereo doesn't have a built in cd player, listening to cds on the go became too tedious

Last year I bought 90 records. This year I just hit 30 and only have a few on order. Pending any surprises, I don’t see buying much more this year.

i've added around 30 or so LPs or boxsets this year, but several of those were birthday gifts from/purchased by my partner. either way, i've also slowed down considerably.

I started collecting initially back in high school and that really ramped up in my early-mid 20s, then fell on hard times around 2018 and sold basically everything, setup included. last year my partner and I made the effort to get that same setup and start collecting again. between us we’ve bought around 150 records in the past year, just about. seems insane to me thinking about it now lol, and especially considering a lot of them have been on the pricy side. that said we have been forced to cool down significantly on the purchasing lately bc money’s getting tighter.

I also have been approaching my collecting this time around very differently than the first time. before I really just wanted to get either the cheapest version of everything I could, or the coolest variant of everything I could, and I was buying a lot of modern emo/pop-punk/rock/etc stuff (a lot of which I have since grown out of). nowadays I am obviously collecting a bunch of long-time favorites, but also branching out and getting some classic/oldies records as well. I’ve also been going out of my way to try and research the best quality pressings of the releases I buy, within reason, and I have found this to be incredibly rewarding on the whole. some of them have really really blown me away.

would be great if they did ACBTLD already instead of these over and over and over again.

I've probably bought about as much as I did last year, maybe a little less. Running out of space is more of a factor than price for me, but I wouldn't say no to lower prices!

  10. I've slowed way down on purchases in the last few years. Partly prices, partly space (both of which mean I'm mostly just ordering the new albums and occasional represses from my top 10 or so bands), and having a kid which means I have less time to just browse at record stores.

i'm gonna have to get creative with space here in the future. my partner got a postdoc in Iowa so we're moving next summer after we defend our dissertations, and i'm nearly out of room on my second Kallax. might get a 2x1 equivalent from Target for temporary storage, but the apartments we're looking at might also be a bit smaller than what we're used to. either way, it could be a problem down the line.

I’m glad this discussion is being had in here, because as I list some of my vinyl on Discogs, I’m just not getting the same joy out of my collection that I used to.

Or even from buying new records. I have maybe purchased 3-4 this year? I do feel that the bubble is currently bursting on a larger level.

Since I started collecting about 18 months ago, I've amassed 522 records (and counting) but went into this hobby with a general idea of what bands and albums I wanted to own. I will be slowing down from now on and being even more selective going forward. About 30 records per month is an insane stat. Using $40 shipped as the average price, that's...a lot of money, holy fuck.

I've noticed my tastes have expanded considerably this year to include a lot of international and older music, so I've been enjoying checking out the Used sections lately.

All I'll say is that after my wife leaving me I did some retail therapy and I have zero regrets.
