I don't like dubs because I think most of the voice actors are pretty meh, and I enjoy watching things in their intended language, but largely because I find there's a difference in audio quality with a lot of dubs. In japanese, the voices sound like their part of the overall world, but a lot of dubs sound like they're recorded in a cold room and just overlaid, not truly baked into it

I’m watching Yu Yu Hakusho dubbed and it’s actually great lol, just finished the Dark Tournament arc and it was so well paced

Just realized I’m wearing one of my custom Yusuke shirts. So here is my shirt’s twin when it was freshly printed.

My friend printed me a bunch of custom shirts with this printer she used to have, like 4-5 years ago, and I just chose a bunch of art I liked. Two of the shirts (different colors) were from an artist’s drawing of Yusuke that I got commissioned with a Kickstarter perk to fund their art book. She printed the shirts on comfort colors too, so they’re the comfiest fucking thing to lay around in. Only thing that sucks is that they’re getting pretty faded now.

I don't really have a preference between dub or sub unless the differences are like, super immense. Like I find the 90's Sailor Moon dub pretty much unwatchable now because of all the silly changes and accents that make zero fucking sense, even though that very dub was what really got me into anime in the first place. I guess my one rule is that if I start a series a certain way, I need to finish it that way. So if something I'm watching gets a dub halfway through me watching the subbed version, I'm not going to switch because I'm already used to the subbed version and vice versa

It always seems like there’s a big part of the fandom that gatekeeps against dubs.

idk, I prefer dubs, except DBZ. I grew up with it on Toonami and I just associate those voices with those characters.

    That's crazy cool.

I hate when shirts fade. Band shirts and custom shirts tend to do that the most. Or they rip more easily. At least in my experience.

I think dubs used to be very terrible but have come an extremely long way and are very good now. I’ve watched episodes of One Piece subbed and dubbed, and both are great. Same with MHA and a few others too. I think the stigma around dubs is still around from just how bad it genuinely used to be.

    I'm not a gatekeeper, I'll just silently judge/mercilessly tease.

But real talk, I also started with dubs until I came across anime with no dub and was forced to sub, and over time I've just come to prefer the subs.

Hearing the original Japanese, even if I don't completely understand what I'm hearing, has a nuance and attitude that seems irreplaceable by another language.

Not everything is easily translated, unfortunately, and things get lost that are at least partially, if not completely retained by hearing the original dialogue.

I don't know how else to explain it. I just know anime would not be the same anymore without the Japanese to go with it. It's permeated my gaming habits too.

Absolutely must hear the eeeehs and gomens and "eat a duck I must" (Squid Girl reference) to fully enjoy the experience.

Dubs are better for long shows with a million episodes that you’d rather watch more as a background thing than having to sit through each episode paying 100% attention

I just appreciate both. My little collection is always dual audio, if possible, because I still always want that option.

Dub is also a gateway for getting more people into anime, so I feel like there should be more respect for it. Most of us probably wouldn’t be in this thread without dubs. Now we’re getting huge video game anime on huge platforms that unfortunately wouldn’t exist without having a dub most likely. Some people stick with dub, some people move over to sub. And there’s also accessibility reasons for having a dub.

I know Pen is just messing around though, so this isn’t in response to what he said. I think the whole stigma is funny. The topic is just interesting to me because outside here there’s still vile hatred for dub watchers. Lol

This makes sense. Egghead ended in the manga just a couple chapters ago.

People on MyAnimeList take the whole debate super fucking seriously and it's just funny to me because bro it's seriously not that deep. Then again, I can't take most of them seriously on anything anyway when they're all super fucking right wing and claim to "love anime" while having a mean score of like 4.57/10

Yeah, I’m a little surprised they aren’t finishing Egghead first and then taking a hiatus honestly

Egghead is divided nicely into an informal part 1 and part 2, and this most recent episode is right where informal part 1 ended, so it makes sense to me. Plus if any part of OP deserves movie-level animation that takes a lot of time, it's what's about to come up

Spent the last several days reading the Succession Contest arc in HxH. Honestly it’s nowhere near as difficult to follow as I had remembered from getting about halfway through last time. The issue is just a couple things:

    (1) there are just way too many goddamn characters and dynamics going on, detrimentally so. Practically anyone who isn’t a prince, hunter, or phantom troupe member just feels replaceable, like the only thing that defines them is their nen ability if they even have one. And he just keeps adding more. After a certain point, accepting that you’re just going to misremember who exactly certain people are is just what needs to be done

    (2) He often goes way too far down a logical/speculative rabbit hole of a singular point, and then a new twist or reveal happens that either proves that rabbit hole correct or wrong. This is where I imagine a lot of people struggle with it, because it really is characters going on complete tangents. But again, what’s important then is to simply forge ahead and accept the idea that you might not totally understand what happened at a certain point

Besides those things, I’ve actually found it pretty easy to follow everything that’s happening and also be engaged. As much as I like more of the phantom troupe, I’ve been disappointed with their little subplot because as of right now it still feels tangential to the drama of the succession contest which I feel so wrapped up in. I realize it’s all going to come together in the end, but still

So in Re:Zero, Crunchyroll subbed Subaru to call Emilia his waifu instead of his bride, and a hundred angry nerds are just fuming about it on YouTube comments, and things like this makes me not want to be a fan of anything, because fanbases are so unbelievably toxic about everything.
