I’m going to Deryck’s book release and conversation tomorrow in New Jersey. Will report back with any news.

I knew there was drama regarding songwriting credits but had no idea the extent of it. Yikes. No more listening to Treble Charger songs the one time of year I choose to.

I had the displeasure of meeting with Greig Nori a number of times back in those days. I always knew he was a slime ball, but I never would have dreamt any of that. So fucked up

Also had no idea he was pushing 40 when I first heard “American Psycho”. Dude was legit trying to pass himself off as like 15 years younger.

Just got to the Greig Nori stuff in the book. I'm audiobooking it on Spotify as it doesn't come out in Australia until January, and fuck paying international shipping, plus I'm enjoying that Deryck's reading it.

Sum 41 just formed and Nori showed up at their first show is where I'm up to. Really enjoying it so far, I love this band so much. Sad to see them go.

Okay just wrapped the conversation with Deryck live in Jersey. Some highlights:

    - been thinking about writing this book/approached about it over the last 7 years

    - Fat Lip, In Too Deep, Motivation all written within weeks of each other. Felt like torture to get these songs together, nothing came easy

    - management/label constantly on his back to get new material out, especially in the first 4 years after signing to Island

    - hasn’t felt like he’s “made it” yet. Always thinks next single/album is the “next one”

    - Sum 41 would meet bands and felt like most had these big egos that they never had. Thinks it was their Canadian upbringing

    - felt like he’s never truly had writers block but has felt uninspired at moments. Buying new guitars helps him

    • was told to get heavier gauges and tune a half step down because guitar would always get out of tune
    • Opening for Mighty mighty bosstones made them learn on how to really put on a show
    • Deryck was at NOFX final show, said he had no real emotions about it even though NOFX was held as the “benchmark” of punk to them
    • Says he talked to his wife, manager, and only Fat Mike about ending Sum 41
    • “No Reason” came to him quickly, says to him it feels like Still Infected more than Chuck song
    • Inspiration behind does this looks infected was “we need a record, quick” took 6 weeks. His primary motivation: “don’t be a one hit wonder”
    • Most proud of Screaming Bloody murder, feels like it didn’t get the recognition, that era felt like a nightmare

Has anyone read the book yet? I sat down and read about two-thirds of it yesterday. Its pretty wild. The Grieg Nori stuff isn't just like a one-time accusation: its the central thesis of the book, informing the whole story. "My life through heaven and hell" might as well be "My life through dealing with a manipulative monster who groomed me, strong-armed his way into money that wasn't his and used his influence over my entire career." Basically, the entire book is about the journey of Deryck's career exploding, but with this dark, secret presence always there, under the surface, dictating where he would go, how he would act, business decisions, personal decisions, etc. Its terrible. Oof.

I just got to the end of their time in the DRC, and Deryck and Avril have just gone public, etc.

The Grieg stuff is fucking insane, and awful, and heartbreaking. I hope as I get to the end of the book Deryck finds some peace and resolution with it all.

    Grieg is fucking monster.

I just got to the writing of The Hell Song. Would’ve never thought it was about a situation like that.

Odd to think that watching these music videos, live DVD's and clips etc. when I was 13/14/15, they all gave me so much joy while he was in so much pain.

Just finished the book. One takeaway: Stevo…does NOT come off well in this book. At all. Now, granted, it’s all ancient history and is written in a totally one-sided manner (it is an autobiography, after all), so it’s likely that there are two sides to every story, but Deryck makes him look like a complete dick.

Since it’s obvious Stevo is still friends with Cone and Dave, I had long held out hope that maybe he would come out and play some at the final show, but after reading this? I don’t see that happening. Would love to be wrong though! Maybe he’s moved on and is totally fine having dirty laundry aired out because it’s so far in the past, but it seems like Deryck didn’t tell anyone what was in this book, and I would certainly feel blindsided if I were him. But who knows!

Where I'm up Stevo seems fine. They're about to record Underclass Hero and Dave seems a bit checked out.

2/3 of the way through the book. What's striking to me is the Avril marriage period. I forgot how DIVIDED those times were music-wise even though if you were, like a 45 year old adult at the time, Sum 41 and Avril Lavigne weren't terribly different. Nowadays it's really easy for people to like both and there's no issue but seemed like it caused a huge rift in their marriage at the time.

    Things have changed.

I liked the book a lot. You could tell by the writing style that he actually wrote it himself, so you can forgive the clunkier stuff in favor of the realism. Crazy just how off the rails they were in terms of partying ... getting paid in coke over cash, Deryck dropping lines into shots of Jack and throwing those back onstage. The whole mystic blue powder thing.

Not a good look for Steve for a lot of the book, but it's obviously just one person's side of the story. The Greig Nori stuff was horrific and so sad.

Glad they got back on the rails and made more awesome albums.

Thanks for spoiling the post credits scene where Jerry Finn shows up to tell Tom DeLonge he's putting together a team.

I feel like an absolute sicko for seeing the trailer for this:

    Establishing shot of Fenix TX

People spray painting Davey Havok’s hairstyle onto mirrors

The brief half time In Too Deep motif

Someone arguing with a man in charge of the label that this record “could be a Hit or Miss”
