One of their only albums that does something totally different is "so boring." Got it!

  3. I’ll never understand reading something as poignant as your piece on how music moved you and replying with something lacking any thought, let alone grace. I’ve always found it .. hmm, tacky? Rubs me the whole wrong way. Drive by posting.

Kind of doubt that poster actually read the piece, tbh.

Listening to it now (again), album is very decent.
Set aside the need for speedy pop punk and this does great.

As someone who sets Lights and Sounds as my easy favourite of theirs, this seems great, apart from the LP-shaped void (especially for us drummers that cut our teeth on Ocean Avenue) that is partially filled by intentionally going bigger and slower.

Would expect people that only enjoy Transmission Home to also dig Crash the Gates as well at least, really enjoy the tension in the chorus. Although that opening riff in TH is always amazing.

I too, as a drummer, was a little disappointed in the more standard performance, but I gotta say that Nate absolutely brings it on the Self-titled and Childhood Eyes.

What a wonderfully written review. This is why I love music. It connects us. It meets us where we are and can somehow make us feel less alone knowing somebody else in the world is experiencing joy, anger, or loss. "They sound like him"... what an amazing thing. Great review. Great album. Thank you.

I adore this album. 10 years ago, Paper Walls was my favorite YC album. I can now say with confidence that Lift A Sail is my favorite YC album. Life has happened and this album has been the soundtrack trough moments of grief and sorrow. Songs I loved before now have deeper meaning. I often listen to this album front to back because it has this particular flow. Fragile and Dear is the song where I think they nailed what they were going for on this album, all the elements that describe this album are contained in that wonderful song. Here’s to 10 more years of enjoying Lift A Sail!

very nostalgic album. nate young on the drums kind of pushed them in a more simplified alternative rock direction and I thought it worked for them

  10. Never understood the backlash for the drum performance. I don't see how a more technical approach or fills like their older records would fit the slower, arena rock thing they had going on here.

Doesn't mean Nate's playing is simple either, sometimes you just got to play what's right for the song and in that sense he nailed it.

Beautifully written. I was excited for this change and think it’s right up there as one of my favorite albums from the band.

Someone be super toxic about Yellowcard, and he'll pop in lol. He tends to show up more for the negative comments sadly! But I can't blame the guy for being defensive of his art.

  13. This was such an amazing read. Really grateful for your kindness and vulnerability Craig. I have never been shy about how much this record means to me. It was written during the most lonely and difficult time in my life. It is wild to look back on it now 10 years later from the happiest place I’ve ever been and remember just how much I needed to make Lift a Sail exactly the record that it was. I am forever grateful to Ryan and Sean for being patient during that time and allowing me to go through it, often using our music as treatment for how sad I was. I believe this will always be my favorite Yellowcard album no matter how many more we may have the chance to make. It’s not for everyone, but for those that it did connect with, I know that I share a very special connection with those fans. Thanks for sharing your story dude. “My fear, is a memory. It’s a reverie, and I’m free.”

An honor to have you read this, Ryan. And thank you for writing this album. One of those “so glad this came out right when I needed it” records for me.

Probably not a very popular opinion at all but this is the only Yellowcard album I can listen to from start to finish. I still consider Paper Walls my favorite but even that one has a couple songs I tend to skip. Lift A Sail is a very close second though
