Super fans are generally awful and have garbage opinions on these types of things.

 

Superfans were mad about the Batman movie in 1989. They are the people you should listen to least.

 

True, I mean when Heath Ledger was announced he was gonna play The Joker in The Dark Knight, people were outraged.. then the movie came out and those people were proven wrong!

while the article itself says they're mostly showing these "superfans" marketing materials for feedback (and not the whole project), the fact that some of their criticism about a project's marketing could result in changes to a show or film sounds very concerning.

 

Hiring super fans to help with lore and continuity would probably be beneficial for some of this stuff but that’s stupid

 

This is one of the worst things I've ever seen.

 

The super fans that GRRM works with gives me enough evidence that this should never happen.

Trying to appease the loudest fans is how you get absolute trash that those fans themselves will even hate.

 

As someone who loves a good superhero comic, I can say with confidence that fandom is on average a detriment to good, fun storytelling. So many fans in that niche industry become flagship writers and then write absolute unimaginative slop, lol.

 

They take ownership of the property and any deviation from it angers them. I catch myself complaining a little bit too much about the changes in the Final Fantasy VII remake series, but we have to understand that adaptations are always going to have changes for modern audiences.

 

Well now it’s mostly any deviation from what they made up in their head

 

The ideology of fandom is not conducive to great creative works. There's needs to a level of dissatisfaction with the status quo, a hubris that you can progress the form, an attempt to capture a new vision.

Fandom demands the opposite, that artists must kowtow and respect the imagined wishes of past works.
