This is completely off topic, but I just learned about it and it might be a good place to poll... but to the US males in here over the age of 26... did you sign up for selective service registration?

I have never even heard of it and I applied for citizenship and just panicked that it's a felony for not signing up and in a lot of cases, an automatic denial of citizenship.

I am over a certain age that I think I am exempt (or at least outside the statute of limitations for denial based on that)... but how did I not know it was a thing that as a US male, you're supposed to sign up for that? I asked a few friends and they had no idea and subsequently never signed up either.

 

Yes, right around the time the Iraq war started and we were scared there was going to be a draft.

I think at least in my state that when you go to get a Driver's License it automatically enrolls you or like it alerts you to opt-in. I just remember not having to do anything special to make that happen.

 

I couldn’t tell you if it’s still a thing or not. But when I turned 18, yes, I had to sign up for it.

 

Yoooo. Thanks! I checked on the website and it must have been done when I got my license. I read that that wasn't necessarily the case but I guess the state I was in, it was. Phewwww. Was sweating over here about being denied citizenship.

Also on a sad / lame note, my interview is on election day. I wish I had applied, got accepted sooner.

yeah no, 99% chance your friends (and maybe even you? might different as a non citizen) did sign up and just don’t know. i filled out a form the first time i got a license

 

That’s probably what I got. August 2004 for me.

 

I just remember being filled in my high school auditorium either being told about it or having to fill out some card. 2003-4, so there was no consideration of being in a "draft" at the time, just seemed like a formality.

I got my driver's license a little bit after I turned 18. I my selective service registration in the mail. It was 2007 at the height of The Surge in Iraq so it made me nervous
