Can't they very pointedly not do that? I feel like it's been mentioned multiple times in this thread that they don't have the rights to the books. Am I misunderstanding?

  2. I think they have the rights to the LOTR trilogy and The Hobbit, but not anything else, meaning the Silmarillion and whatever else there is. That was my impression.

I don't even care about accuracy to the books, just have interesting things happen! I feel like every scene in this show goes on for five minutes longer than it should while simultaneously not moving the plot forward. Speed this fucker up and give it some actual storytelling momentum, and then maybe it's not just beautiful looking fanfic, but something that is actually engaging in it's own right.

They can do anything in the Appendices of the Lord of the Rings on top of The Hobbit and the trilogy. The Silmarillion and the other off-shoots they can't touch. The Appendices are quite expansive, though.

Visually, yeah, I don't disagree. But I also think it's kinda funny they could've used that for Sauron's entrance instead, since he came in on a boat in this, now that I think about it.

I’ve been behind all season but finally up to date. I’ve really enjoyed this season. I’m pumped for the finale next week.

It’s up already. I have no idea when it actually drops, but I watched it during lunch today.

they're handling everything with the wizards so poorly. i was thinking it's insane they haven't revealed the dark wizard as saruman yet and then I remembered it's still The Stranger and not gandalf lmao

I don’t think the dark wizard can be Saruman since Saruman is still “good” during The Hobbit

Maybe the Istari leave at the end of the show and come back later by boat lol

To me the difference between this show and the Hobbit movies is that TROP feels like it's at least trying to be faithful to Tolkien's *themes* even at the expense of story, while the Hobbit movies feel cynical in a way that is faithful to nothing.

idk i feel like this is quite cynical, or at least, it treats tolkien fans like they're dummies with the way it bends the text

My parents have been watching the show and they keep asking me about the lore and then they watch an episode and I have to repeatedly tell them “that didn’t happen” or “it was different in the book” and they keep getting confused

I’ve enjoyed the show so far though. It’s still entertaining.

Am I the only one who thinks this whole Orc arc in season 2 is a little weird? Lol

No I’ve seen others point out how it’s odd. Idk if the writers are trying to make us have sympathy for the orcs or what lol but it comes off as very weird.

I have seen that as merely context for when a bunch of orcs stop supporting Adar or something like that.
