That last anecdote about whiffleball got me. Based behavior and I love it.

Inshallah, they will be arriving vertical and leaving horizontal.

 

I once worked on a commercial with Henry Winkler several years ago (might have even been almost a decade ago now oh my god what is this life) and they needed crew members to walk through the background as extras. Now, at this moment in time I was really struggling financially and personally, feeling like a failure and just hating myself constantly. So they tell me what to do and where to walk and they call action and I do the thing, but they need me to walk faster, but not TOO fast you know? I do that a couple more times and there are some flubs happening here and there with the camera movements and lighting so they keep cutting, but then they keep telling me to hit my mark at a different pace. I’m all in my head like “I can’t even fucking walk correctly. I’m a fucking embarrassment. Why am I even here?”

So, aw god, Henry Winkler walks over to me and one of the other crew members also subbing in as an extra and tells us we’re doing great, no sweat. Then he says “when you’re walking in the background, think about who you are in this scene. You’ve got somewhere to be and you’ve got to get there as quickly as you can, but you’re not in a rush either because you never want to rush through life. You don’t want to miss anything. Just think about that as you’re walking and before you know it, you’ll get to where you need to be. Everything you’re doing behind me is just as important as what I’m doing up here.”

At this last comment I kind of nodded and chuckled and he very genuinely looks at me and says something I’ll never forget:

“No, I’m serious. Everything you do matters. Everything you are. Don’t ever let anyone make you believe any different, even if it’s yourself.”

He gets called back to speak with someone from the accounts team and I smile at him and then turn to rush away and have myself a private cry out in the hallway where Henry Winkler can’t see me.
