Saying you'll help trump succeed is definitely not a good answer.

I agree that we have become atomized, isolated bubbles. And I agree with the necessity of people to get involved in their local politics. I think that the model we might want to look at is the BLM model of connected, but decentralized forms of engagement in political activity.

GOP has shown the last 6 or so years that you kind of can. Either way, I don't see the Dem's winning back either house at the midterm. I'm obviously not saying obstruct absolutely everything, but Dem's should be promising to their constituencies that they won't let the worst parts of Trump's platform come into being.

I will not be surprised if the next candidate needs to run on the opposite side of trade, because Trump's plans here aren't going to help people. I liked Bernie. I voted for him. I am also less convinced than most he would have won this election. I don't think he wins FL or MI or OH or NC or IA or NV. But, we'll never know, and arguing counter factuals is probably only gonna make me sad. Cause there's a reality here now.

Reading the tea leaves at the moment ... I think Cuban runs in 2020. Maybe Sheryl Sandberg as an outside chance. I think either of them would run as an outsider to the Dem establishment. I think that a faction of democrats will see that as their message - fuck the DNC establishment, and then group two will take the message of a Trump win as needing to run their version of that candidate - the outsider. At that moment it's a coin flip mostly depending on Trump's favs at the end of his term and what he did ... and turn out again. And if Warren gets painted by the outsiders as "The Establishment" herself ... then she's gonna have a really hard general election as well.

All the owner of the US has to do is rig a draft lottery or threaten to sell the city to Kansas city.

Our best bet is the capitals but we'll end up being the wild.

  9. I believe they mean in specific ways of governance, not like in the "well ship out all the muslims" way.

I actually think this is a good tactic. Bernie impressed me with the way he said exactly this in his statement.

  11. How do we get rid of this woman? God damn.

There's going to be four years of protests. More people voted against this asshole. Deal with it.

It blows my mind that we couldn't get a half decent turnout with the literally caricature of the democratic antichrist running this election. I know that voting against someone isn't as exciting as voting for a candidate but god damn, if there was ever a time to get off your ass and vote it was now

I agree on that, but I hope the lesson is to look at the success of a Bernie and an Obama (and even Trump to some extent). I don't think everyone on the left needs to agree with every single one of your policies, but I think a relatable, honest politician could still bring most of that together. As you said about the left voting when they're inspired, I think the route to take is to be authentic. That isn't in abundance in the democratic party, but I'm hopeful that someone can harness that. I mean, you look at Obama's approval ratings, and that's not all coming from the center left and people agree with everything that he does. He appeals to the far left despite his faults for a reason, same with Bernie in the other direction. Just trying to be positive haha.

All of these things, even the small ones, are of a piece with a broader remaking of relationships within the state and with the private sector. From what I can tell, he is looking to implement a form of Keynesian military model, but rather than making a generous welfare state, it will largely be corporatist. And I don't think that obstruction will hurt the democrats, so long as they implement lessons from this election. That includes actually fostering relationships with groups they otherwise wouldn't consider, i.e., local, progressive parties.

Trump master plan: do those things first too lull dissenters into false sense of security, thennn release fascist hell.

I don't think we've experienced something like this before, but if people keep protesting everyday, blocking streets, blocking bridges, I would think some good would come from it. I doubt Trump will be removed from office, but it's within our right to protest non stop, so it's an interesting situation.

In other news I find depressing but not shocking, I just checked the local results for my county and I was one of 145 people that voted for the green party candidate for senate. Nothing makes your vote feel pointless quite like not even being able to fill a rural highschool auditorium with your fellow voters

  19. OH yesterday: "I know she wasn't inspiring and she kinda sucked, but you're supposed to vote against the racist, sexist, asshole anyway."

My fear is that the only way for a democrat to win is to have a force of personality. The idealized JFK. Bill Clinton. Obama. These were personalities. I fear it's the wrong way to nominate candidates. If every 4-8 years we need to have another grassroots movement. Another celebrity politician. Then it leads to this exact outcome every now and again as well ... the lull year.

  20. We got 10,145 write in votes for our sheriff candidate. She got destroyed, but, at least it was more than 145! Heh, so now I don't feel as bad.

True, but realizing this could also hopefully offer some clarity moving forward as to who is actually a viable candidate.
