Ep 6 was alright. Still building up to the attack on Eregion.

I personally find the writing to be pretty lackluster, almost like it's fanfic. They also really want to remind you that it's set in the same universe as those movies you loved. Galadriel doesn't need to be recycling film dialogue from Eowyn and Gandalf, and yet the show just can't help itself. Speaking of Gandalf, the slow burn that is their teasing the Stranger's identity is getting old. I fully expect Tom to step in front of him and tell him he "shall not pass" in the next episode. A little bit of fan service is OK, but we're so far beyond that.

Yeah that’s a tad obvious criticism lol. It’s literally fan fiction. They couldn’t adapt certain parts from Tolkien from what I remember?

It’s not even fan fiction, because the writers aren’t necessarily fans haha

I also thought I read they couldn’t adapt things from previous books as well?

I don’t think it’s amazing, but it’s good enough, I’m not a very critical TV viewer lol

Writing wise, yeah it’s not great compared to the LOTR films or the books, but I never expected a writing room to get close to Tolkien when they have to make up stuff they don’t have the rights for.

That said the production value and set pieces keep me interested.

  13. Finally started season 2 and episode 3 is such a slog.

season is 8 episodes and it’s gonna feel like 20 at the pace it’s going.

I generally liked season 1, even if some of it was slower/sleepier than I would have liked. Felt like they hit upon a bunch of interesting stuff and built it up pretty well over the course of the season. Season 2 is just a complete miss for me so far, though. They just have way too many characters, so the things I find interesting generally get way too little screen time for my liking, and they're way outnumbered by the things I find super boring or just kind of dumb.

I know everyone dumps on Jackson's Hobbit movies, but I'd watch those any day over this shit.

Idk man, at least those had actors I liked.

  17. Idk I'm really enjoying S2. Some sublpots are less interesting than others for sure, but I just love being in this world, and it consistently feels like they nailed that.

The world is really beautifully rendered, but most of the characters are so, so boring. There is no one that I'm invested in at all.

  20. I enjoy most of the characters, but how can you not love Durin and Disa?! I enjoy every time they're on screen. The Khazad Dum stuff has been the most compelling for me over both seasons so far.

The dwarves are definitely my favorite part. I kind of hate all the elves and hobbits, though.

A small thing that goes to show that the writers/show runners don't quite really care about accuracy to Tolkien... Galadriel is older than Celebrimbor; yet they're very clearly shown differently. There's so many little things like this that really don't do this show any favors when it's so easy to just... adapt what's there. Another: Gandalf didn't come down in a meteor... he literally arrived on a boat with Saruman and Radagast.

It's extremely beautiful looking fan fiction, and the Dwarves are the best of the lot, but I'm really struggling with a lot of the choices. This season's Numenor plotline is the most accurate to the books of anything they've done, though.

And yet, I'm having fun. I can separate it from the books on most levels by just turning off the nerd brain that wrote his college senior thesis on Tolkien.

I constantly feel like i’m watching a different show then everyone else here lol. I enjoy this way more than the Hobbit movies, but not as much as the LOTR. I feel like that’s a fine place to be.
