trippy, wonderful chamber pop/avant-electro-jazz from the 70’s.

Dope 1985 French album that sounds like a cross between Eberhard Weber, Hiroshi Yoshimura, and John Hassell.

So stoked to listen to the Nala album

  7. None of these were on my radar except Ill Considered! Good looks

The Nala Sinephro album is really good. Haven't listened to her last album anywhere near as much as I should have (last.fm says twice in 2021, which is CRIMINAL), but this new one has already got me revisiting it and it's better than I remember.

The Ill Considered album is also really good too. Didn't know they had another one out this year, so was a pleasant surprise. Will be listening to the Jaubi album next.

Nala album is cool. Reminds me of a lot of the stuff posted in the Ambient Thread and it's sort of interesting to me how much crossover there is at times - I probably would've joined this thread years ago had I known how broadly "jazz" is defined.

I saw Nala a couple months ago at pitchfork and the live show also was great

Thanks for the posts! Was hyped about Nala but had no idea about the others.

These were also on my radar today:

Brennan is a member of Mary Halvorson’s Amaryllis band and was the highlight of the group (besides Halvorson herself, of course) both times I’ve seen them.

  12. Will listen to anything Harrington does and anyone Mary co-signs so absolutely sold on both. I saw Halvorson for the first time this past Sunday with the Marc Ribot Trio, was one of the best shows I've ever seen lol. Her record from this year is probably my #2 right now

Halvorson with Ribot sounds absolutely amazing. I’m jealous. I’ve been lucky to see her several times in different configurations (Amaryllis, Code Girl, Thumbscrew, etc.) at Big Ears Festival, which is only a couple hours up the road from me. Ribot plays there often too, but I’ve never seen the two of them together.

I have to know what your #1 is!

  14. Sounds like an incredible festival! They are doing a few more dates together but doesn't look like anywhere near you.

My number one so far this year is this, arguably not even jazz? but is made up of a lot of a lot of Chicago area/Jeff Parker/Makaya associated players, plus Jeremiah Chiu doing analog synth stuff. Also in the style of Makaya's In the Moment ie all cut up and rearranged in editing but it rarely feels like that and works when it does.

SML is gonna be a top 10 of the year for me too

Need to revisit SML, only gave it one listen. Didn’t really stand out on that first listen either.

International Anthem in general hasn’t really done much for me this year. Feels like they’ve been releasing a lot of jazz adjacent stuff and none of it has really clicked for me.

  17. uh…wow!

Oof. Been dying to catch Sun Ra Arkestra with Yo La Tengo one of these days.

  19. the Arkestra owns saw it a few weeks ago for free opening for Kim Gordon (lol) and Marshall Allen makes you think he couldn’t be a day over 80

Nala Sinephro record is really terrific

  21. Yeah, really loving the Nala record. When the first one came out I liked it but didn't return to it very much, but I guess at this point in my life I am more ready to embrace modular synth jazz. SML also has Jeremiah Chiu on the modular

listening to this for the first time and wow... truly heavenly. I guess you could also call this classical but w/e

very hyped for that one - haven't listened yet. the Ulla / Ultrafrog collab from earlier in the year is a fantastic ambient record.
