if your “theory” on immigration results in keeping white communities white, I’ve got bad news on wanting less Nazis because you’re doing what they want you to do and they’ll be glad to couch Nazism in progressive language. Some things you don’t have to overthink. This is a message board, so yeah, you’re gonna get jokes about Ohio. No elected official is gonna be like “well it’s Ohio” in their immigration policy. The fact is demographics shift and migratory flows are fluid and the factors that go into how it all works are vast and complex, but as far as the United States go, community demographics have shifted and changed with immigration all across the country since this country existed, American culture has always been shaped by immigration and you don’t have to adopt white supremacist friendly policies to “preserve” anything. This whole debate is coming from racist conservative rhetoric basically saying it’s impossible for different cultures to co-exist, or even more insidious, non-western culture shouldn’t exist in Ohio or other traditionally white American spaces. America should welcome immigrants and refugees, and it should be hospitable for them. That’s really it, you can debate how to implement that in practice but there’s no reason to prioritize white/American communities who themselves arose from immigration and demographic shifts in the first place.

  2. I think this coversation is accepting the premise a little too much. I am unconvinced the town of Springfield, Ohio is actually experiencing any migrant-related issues that weren't created by right wing media

I dont have a theory on immigration, I have been unsatisfied with the talking points i've heard from liberals and I was hoping people could point me towards leftist principles and philosophies that shape immigration policy thought up by people smarter than me and liberal media. I agree those principles should include taking refugees and should not prioritize preserving culture because that is impossible. I do think we should be trying to create a system that integrates migrants without making the communities they are joining feel displaced.

"immigration is too complex" is not good enough, we need to be studying which socioeconomic factors, enfranchisement opportunities etc factor into whether or not a new population integrating will trigger a rise in fascism and develop plans around them.

I'm not trying to give nazis any new language, I won't be posting any of this to reddit. I want my politics to have a stronger, more defensible position on immigration.

I think the recent rise of the anti-immigration far right parties in Europe point to it being a legitimate cause of alienation. The right wing media is undoubtedly inflaming the situation but I dont think their propaganda is powerful enough to completely fabricate those emotions without an underlying sense of unrest.

If it is completely fabricated we still need to figure out a better way to combat it because they are effectively using it to build power.

Ohio is a political cesspool and does deserve grief but it’s weird to shit on Springfield Ohio when the town welcomed in thousands of immigrants and the town leadership is currently defending them at every turn. Don’t let right wing media amplifying a few dumbasses distract from the fact that this is a town that actually facilitated immigration.

If anything is driving anti-immigration sentiment in Springfield it’s mostly the housing crisis. A big influx in population puts a strain on the already difficult housing market. As usual the problem stems from the dog eat dog world capitalism has built, where lower class folks are constantly pitted against each other for limited resources.

I do think there is wisdom in not sending 20K new people to a place not ready to handle them (Hence why northern cities who have had migrants shipped to them with no warning have had trouble dealing with it), but that's why I question if this was really a govt caused problem. Did the refugee system really settle 20K new people in one area? My understanding of the system has been that once they process you, they kind of just randomly pick where to send you. I don't know how much actual thought is put into it outside of does the area i'm sending you to have resources for refugees to use at all? Like are they really looking at economic conditions in a certain state or town and sending them there?

I also guess I should say I don't know if the Hatian population there are immigrants/migrants or if they're refugees, I just assumed refugee because I thought Hatians still had refugee status
