Hit the nail on the head. I feel like, if we are going to hold people accountable for the many shitty things they do, infidelity can definitely rise to the level of “things that make us feel a little different about listening to artists we loved.”

For a variety of personal reasons, there aren’t many things I find more cowardly or thoughtless than cheating on your spouse, so this one hits close to home for me. Not saying I’m going to stop listening to this band forever and ever, but it definitely changes the way I feel about Dave.

"i don't give a shit" is a bit glib and a dumb thing to post but I do genuinely think it's a bad thing that we know this much about celebs. why on earth would that post need to be something that's posted/that anyone outside of those involved knows?

It's almost like Dave Grohl is one of 8 billion people on this planet who are fallible and complicated. This society humans have created has set an impossible "moral" standard to try and uphold which is directly in contrast with our biological makeup as mammals. Monogamy and marriage (which essentially was invented as a business transaction) are not natural and yet we've forced ourselves into a box that more times than not is going to fail at sometimes, and has got to be even more difficult for any famous person who lives and works in this globalized world where you meet and interact with who knows how many thousands and millions of people. I learned a while ago to stop deifying anyone, no matter how much their art resonates with me, because with the way information is so accessible now, they are bound to disappoint. And why do we even have these expectations? Is it to look up to someone who we think has figured out life and can help us delude ourselves to thinking any relationship is easy and feelings will never change? It doesn't help that this country in particular was founded on such Puritanical principles, compared to a lot of other places where things like this aren't seen as so taboo. Basically, no one should be idolized because life is hard, relationships and feelings are complicated, people change, and humans have made everything infinitely more complicated for ourselves.

 

I'm sure if Dave explains to his wife and kids that monogamy and marriage were simply in contrast with his biological makeup, they will understand

By your logic, we can justify why racism of any kind is okay because it's just biology and how the human psyche was over the millennia, right? With human being tribalistic and whatnot, guess that's okay too.

 

Not really a 1:1. Like I said before, I'd wager that not everyone even in this THREAD has been 100% faithful in relationships so while, yes, it's morally looked down upon it IS a much more common reality than a lot of people may realize and this holier-than-thou attitude towards it from people on the internet wagging their fingers can be a bit much at times. I have no personal investment in Dave Grohl and his relationships and while I'm sad for the family and all those involved, it's really none of my business. Personally, as a listener, I don't need all music I engage with to be made by people who are moral avatars of myself but it's also understandable why people are disappointed.

I mean, just look at here in America with even when it was mostly white... People were hating on the Italians, the Polish, and even more for some made up reasons and it was justified back then.

It's not holier than thou though, it's legit being a scumbag and breaking someone's trust.

Now, I might be coming from this with a different brain because I'm Aromantic so I'm looking at this with a scientific lens of "This doesn't make sense, if you're not in love with someone anymore or tempted to commit Infidelity then why not end things to not hurt them or break their trust before you mess with someone else?" and ultimately it just comes down to because he's a selfish asshole that doesn't care about others. It's like those stories that get read on reddit where he's just sticking with his current wife because she's the safe option while he's not really in love with her (or maybe he is in love, but again, is a selfish asshole looking for a thrill).

And hey, I'm not going to be someone that forces people into a monogamous relationship, if they want to be in an open relationship/be polygamous then that's fine, but he should have communicated that with his wife and kids, but didn't. Instead we read a history of him being a cheater and him putting out a message admitting he's a cheater. Also from the look of things (and from past partners) they didn't sign up for an open relationship either.

Again, I'll bring up that Mister Rodgers example again; let's pretend there was a video of him getting pissed off at a waiter for messing up his order and lets say he gets so angry that he hits them. Now, biologically is that okay? Sure he's angry, and it's a part of human nature and maybe he got so mad that he couldn't control himself and it's understandable. However, it's still wrong and he should have done better, and now Mister Rodgers looks like a jerk.

That's all I'm saying.
